Vaccine and travel

Does anyone know if you still have to quarantine/test if you’ve gotten both doses of the vaccine? Trying to figure out if I can plan a trip in June.

Yes - you still have to quarantine/test for travel even if you have the vaccine.

That being said - there may be different quarantine/testing requirements come June.

Plan as if you need a 3-day quarantine followed by negative test when you return back to NYS which is the policy now, although your workplace/school/daycare may have stricter rules. It’s possible a vaccine exemption could be on the table by then but the reality is there is not a lot of motivation for the state to discourage testing until far in the future. More tests= more stats on how widespread the virus is at any given point and (hopefully) lower positivity rates.

They changed the quarantine rules if you’re exposed and fully vaccinated you don’t have to quarantine. So why would you have to quarantine for travel?? I’m sure they will change that soon. Hopefully by June

I think that’s just a CDC recommendation - I’m not sure if Cuomo had adopted that yet. And it’s only for three months

Cuomo has adopted the CDC guidelines. Logically the travel restrictions should change but with cuomo you never know

The vaccine prevents you from getting sick, you could still transmit the virus to others. The same rules for masking, distancing, etc. still apply even if you have the vaccine.

This. As soon as either the transmission rates go down to an acceptable level or it is established conclusively that vaccinated people cannot infect others, there will be a good reason to change this and many protocols.

That's good! I hadn't seen anything and well he's known to be slow on updating anything that lessens restrictions.

Re: Vaccine and travel

Just plan the trip. How much longer are we expected to put our lives on hold? It's been a year already and no end in sight?
Plan your trip- seems like you will be vaccinated right?
Plan your trip and go.
They can't even enforce these quarantine rules now. So many people i have heard have gone away and just went about life when they got home. You're a step ahead of them by having been vaccinated before your trip.

I thought the rules it’s only good for 3 months you don’t have to quarantine which is ridiculous. So everyone is getting vaccinated and only for 3 months you don’t have to quarantine then you have to again??! What’s the point then if even bothering getting vaccinated!

I don't disagree, but it is only 3 months right now because that is the data they have. They believe you will be protected longer than 3 months, and will eventually adjust accordingly.

And hopefully in 3 mos many more will be vaccinated and the numbers will be down.

It’s insanity o have been on the fence getting vaccinated when the time comes at this point I will not be if it’s only 3 months protection then I would have to quarantine again. Plus I feel like o have natural immunity since I had it already so really no need to get vaccinated!!

It’s out of control at this point. I am over it all!!

Most of the early studies have shown that natural immunity doesn't last as long as the antivirus immunity. They have also indicated that the vaccine immunity will last 1 year or more.
However, they can't officially say that yet until they have the vaccine out longer. It's just computer models and extrapolation.

If they told everyone what they *think* will happen, with multi-year immunity, and then they find out that it's only 9 months, people will be extremely angry and looking to attack the companies, the government, etc. By being cautious in their statements, everyone is just annoyed with them.

Agreed. I feel like “they” know that the vaccine is a fail which is why they now want 2 masks and continued quarantining indefinitely. I don’t see the point of getting the vaccine unless you are elderly or immuno compromised.

ITA with this. They are trying to prevent people like you flying off the handle and overreacting. I Realize it's been a year, but it's a new virus, new vaccine, people are just starting to get vaccinated. You need to give it more time. Scientists are pretty damn good, but they are not God, they cannot predict the future.

Exactly. This is unfolding in real time. We can only know so much right now, but that's not a reason to stop trying to outrun this. The spikes and mutations that keep us in the throes of this crisis and needing to have protocols in place are largely due to people breaking past protocols and exploiting the inadministrability of some of them to do whatever they want without inconvience, no matter what they're told.

Why on Earth would you think the vaccine is a fail? Because people just started to get vaccinated on December 14th so nobody can promise you anything since nobody has been vaccinated for more than two months?
Nobody has ever said two masks and quarantining indefinitely. 10% of the US population is vaccinated. We need, at the bare minimum, 75%. Do the math. We have much more to go before masks and social distancing stop. Of course it will stop eventually. The UK and South Africa variants did not help the situation, but good Lord the vaccine has been out EIGHT WEEKS.
Would you like them to promise you 50 years of immunity, then when it turns out to be 1 year you freak out and say they lied? I would much rather them say 3 months of protection for now, but most likely as we move on they will extend the timeframe of not needing to quarantine anymore. It is a fluid situation.
It has also been proven that natural immunity will start to taper off 90 days after infection. Scientists have said the antibodies from the vaccine are much stronger and will last longer. Which is why they recommend those who have had COVID to still get vaccinated once you have passed 90 days from infection.
Listen nobody was more depressed and angry back in March and April than me. I agree with a lot of these reopening's and genuinely believe we should never go back to the type of lockdown we experienced in the spring. But we can't say we don't believe in vaccines but we are also upset we still have to wear masks and socially distance. People need to pick a lane.

Except that the recommendations have changed. Per the CDC you do not need to quarantine after exposure if you were vaccinated within 3 months. Then why would you need to quarantine after travel - where there is no definitive exposure?

I'm not saying you don't need to wear masks, socially distance, etc., but if you are in contact with a known case of COVID and were vaccinated within 90 days, you don't have to stay locked in your home so logically, why would you need to quarantine after travel as long as it is within 3 months (as of now)?

I'm not planning on getting the vaccine any time soon, so this doesn't affect me one way or the other, but logically the travel restrictions don't make a lot of sense right now.

I thought I read you don't have to quarantine if you're completely vaccinated and have no symptoms. But if you have symptoms, you'll still need to quarantine- vaccinated or not.

ETA: But since you can spread the disease before showing symptoms, why wouldn't you still need to quarantine, maybe for a shorter period of time? I don't know, it all seems so arbitrary.

The other logic flow in the travel quarantine is that I am probably more likely to be exposed right here in NY in my daily life. Why do they act like every other state you travel to is a hot bed of unchecked Covid cases? I can travel into NYC and ride the subways all day long but I cant' go sit on a beach in a private rental home in another state?
