Traveling out of state- returning to school
I know its probably been asked a bunch and I will call the school I just wanted to get info from anyone here who has experienced it or know someone who has.
Travel to FL stay more then 24 hours. Come home on a Tuesday. I want kids to return to school asap.
What needs to be done and timeline?
Thanks SO Much

Traveling out of state- returning to school
Each district is different, so calling the school would be your best bet.

Re: Traveling out of state- returning to school
NYS requires you to either get tested within 3 days before returning home from FL and then on day 4 or after when back in NY as long as both are negative you don’t have to quarantine past day 4.
If you don’t want to do all that than you have to quarantine for 10 days

Yes, this is what my district follows.

Short answer....it’s not worth it. You are stuck here while the rest of the country travels and enjoys life and seeing their loved ones in other states.

Especially if you go to Florida. They like to punish you for going to Florida here- even though their numbers are no worse- and probably better than ours.

I don't agree. We have been traveling extensively throughout the pandemic abiding by all the rules. I do find the NYS rules to be beyond ridiculous at this point given the fact that we are no better than the rest of the country - however, for me a short 3 day quarantine upon returning and a couple of covid tests is well worth a vacation with my family. I love to travel though and we take several vacations a year.

I’ve said on another thread, for us....we are stuck. I don’t get vacation time at work. If I don’t work...I don’t get paid. So taking off an extra three days is impossible. Plus I don’t want my kids to miss another three days on top of school. It’s a stupid rule that are restricted many from traveling. It’s just hard to have loved ones you can’t see or watching families traveling freely (while following guidelines).

Yes we are lucky that we already work from home so don't need to take any time off to travel. Can you do it over Easter break so that you come home Thursday and then you and kids can return to work on monday? You just need to schedule a rapid test early monday morning at an urgent care or your doctor's office if they offer them.

Same. I never pulled my daughter out of school for travel, so I am certainly not keeping her home to quarantine after a trip over a school break. I work from home now unfortunately, so for me, it's not like I'd have to miss work- but I am not having her miss any school. Especially now, she's older, the math is harder, etc- I don't want her missing anything

Traveling out of state- returning to school
I'm in NYC schools, so maybe it's different, but if a child has to quarantine due to travel or exposure, they just do remote learning for those days...isn't that an option for all those saying they don't want their child missing school?

Yes but it's as good as her not being in school. Remote is God awful. She learned absolute ZERO when we were forced remote all spring. She's better off staring at a wall for a week.
They will post assignments for her to do with no teaching or direction and tell her to watch a you tube video if she has questions.
I would never consciously chose that. IMO school trumps a vacation every time, so it's not worth it to me. We can go away when she's off in the summer I guess. Or when they ease these rules

We can do remote learning as well - my kids are hybrid. They are marked as absent unexcused though if they remote in on their in person days for a travel quarantine.
I was thinking of going away a Weds-Tues - that way, they only miss 2 days of school, even with the quarantine (ETA -since they can log in on Thurs and Fri and I do pull my kids out of school for vacations)

Re: Traveling out of state- returning to school
Yeah my kids are remote for a few days while they quarantine but I don't care. They are only in 5th and 3rd grade so they aren't missing much. I would be reluctant to pull my 7th grader because he is in a few 9th grade classes but he is hybrid anyway so it's hardly missing any in school time. Plus our middle and high school are full remote this week due to a covid outbreak in the secondary school.
The whole thing is so stupid. Just another thing making me wish I could leave NY now.

So my school changed we can do remote whenever we want now. For my DD I don’t mind cause her teacher is actually live for basically the whole day so I don’t mind if she is remote. She is also doing really well.
Now my son on the other hand his teacher is barley on live and he is struggling and behind I try to never have him go remote unless the school forces it!
But I will pull my children for vacations! I refuse to go away when everyone else is. Right now I am trying it plan a small getaway within the state where we don’t have to quarantine on return.
Hopefully all this shittt ends soon!!

Traveling out of state- returning to school
Literally just rebooked our canceled Florida trip from last year to this April, 6th grader is missing 5 full days of school for the vacation itself and will be remote for however long said school district dictates by then. Kid has had zero absences this year and we are going for some warmth and a mental break!
