Anyone have a 3d printer?
Just wondering who in here has one or more 3d printers? I have 2 right now. One really large one for big prints, and a smaller one that can do two colors.
I love these things. I'm always making and printing stuff. I have a bunch of Coleman tents for Scouts, and the hubs where the poles meet have a habit of breaking. Coleman won't sell them separately, and I don't want to throw out a good tent just because of a broken piece of plastic. A friend of mine is a much better 3d mechanical engineer than I am, and he recreated the hub. Now, I can print out as many replacements as I need. 
Right now, I'm printing out a bunch of "tick keys" to give out to my Scouts.
I've made whistles, trinkets, tools, gadgets, etc. If it's made of plastic, I can print it.

Anyone have a 3d printer?
My husband has three. He's always printing random stuff for around the house. The most useful thing he has made me is a wall rack for my hair dryer and straightener! He's not that great at designing things on the software, but he gets a lot from thingiverse.com.

We have one. My husband thought it would be fun and maybe educational for the kids. He has helped them to make some models of characters and cars.

No but I am fascinated by them. Check out "unneccessary inventions" on instagram. All his stuff is made by 3d printed. They are incredible

I made a lot of Christmas gifts, too. Lots of tree ornaments, and a bunch of customized gifts for people.
And the range of filaments is very wide. I've had gold, silver, bronze, wood (with actual wood particles in it, so it takes wood stain really well), glow-in-the-dark, transparent, stone look, and any color you can think of.
I also sometimes use the same plastic as LEGO, so you can make either replacement pieces, or custom LEGO pieces that LEGO doesn't make, or standard blocks in colors that you can't buy.

How much do these go for? I know nothing about them but I am always interested in what people use them for.

Just like cars and houses... the sky is the limit...
You can technically start with one under $100, but there's a lot of assembly, it's not very sturdy, and it won't have some of the nice features.
$200 - $300 is the range where you start to have good printers with some of the "important" features included.
$300-$500 is the typical range for a good printer that does just about anything an average person would want.
$500-$1000 is the range for the larger printers, ones that do multiple colors, and other extra features that aren't "needed", but often desirable.
$1000-$3000+ - Professional level printers. There's almost no limit here.
$10,000+ - Industrial level. You can print metal, cement houses, body parts, full-size boats, prototypes, super fast speeds, exotic materials, etc....

I get why these are great and yet I am not sure of the limitations or how they work.
Ex: I have a vintage ice scraper. I've never found one that works as well. I assume the blade is lucite. The handle appears to be a rubberized cover (over the luciite?) Would the 3D printer scan the scraper- Design a pattern or blueprint (not sure of the techno terms), then re-create one? What about materials? I assume there are different strengths of plastic?

Scanners are different than printers. They are starting to come out with effective, affordable 3d scanners, but they still need some tweaking by hand. The newest iPhone has the ability to 3d scan objects.
I design stuff from scratch, or I download entire objects from several websites, or download something and edit it to meet what I need. Like a photo, you can either download it directly or print it, or use Photoshop and tweak it before printing.
There are various types of plastic. Most people/printers use PLA, which is easy to use, but has the lowest melting temperature. A PLA object will get distorted if left in a car in the summer. ABS is the same plastic that LEGO are made from. There's also PETG, Nylon, and several other plastics. All have different strengths and weaknesses.
For an ice scraper, I would start with this:

I would find a scraper that was either what I wanted, or close enough that I could modify it.

Thank you for the explanation. So not as simple as putting my ice scraper on a xerox type copier, and voila: a new ice scraper comes out!   Besides being very practical, I can see how it would make a fun hobby. Keep us posted on any great creations!

Scanner/printers do technically exist, but they are still a very new technology. Like all tech, once something exists, it's just a matter of time before it becomes cheaper and easier to use, and every company makes one. For many years, there were computer printers, but no scanners/copiers. Then, there were separate personal scanners. Eventually, there were 3-in-1 printer/scanner/copier machines.
