Let's talk retirement dreams. :o) Where is your ideal place to retire and why?
I’ll work until I die so wherever my DD decides to bury me.

The good thing about having an only child I don't have to decide on which one to follow or be in a central place for them.
A house for each sounds amazing. I will take one of those houses if one of your kids doesn't want it. haha.
windyweather21 I want him to live the life he wants to and hopefully that would include me being in some part of it. I just want to be close so if the day comes he has his own family I can help watch the kids and they won't have to worry about any daycare. For the first 3 years of my son's life it was great to have my family close by to not have to worry about sending him to daycare until he was 3 and it was best for everyone he did and his socialization.

That sounds perfect to me too. Unfortunately my husband has some weird hatred for communities like that. He is a strange bird.

Oh we will be too but we want to move elsewhere eventually. Someplace more relaxing and less financially stressful.

That’s great. We live far from both parents and all worked so no one would have been able to watch, if they could, and would.
My kids, especially the one is so independent and on the verge right now of moving (2 months rent already paid) so if we move away that one would probably not go with us. Who knows though what the future holds :)

This one has been soooo independent from a toddler. The other one not as much but getting better.

Let's talk retirement dreams. :o) Where is your ideal place to retire and why?
We've just started talking about this. We've decided in 15 years while we won't be able to retire, DD will be 26 and hopefully on her own. We will move someplace warm, very close to or on the beach (but not too humid) and get "pay the bills" jobs and just enjoy life. Now we need to start researching places and setting up visits.

I'd like to stay in the northeast, but ultimately it will be wherever my kids land. DD starts grad school in Philly and I'm sort of hoping she lands near there so I can retire in a log home in PA somewhere.
I don't want to be the grandma that sends a check in the mail on holidays, I want to be present in my grandchildrens lives.

This is what we wanted and we just moved to Florida. Hoping our kids stay close when they grow, or we’ll spend the years bouncing around to visit them

We have family down in the carolinas, delaware, and VA. They all love it, but by the end of my visits with them all, I'm pretty bored not gonna lie. Outside of their developments, it's all just like shopping centers. I don't want to move somewhere that i'll be bored of a few months in, even if it's in a nice development with amenities.
I feel like I would stay here. There's no place like LI. Unless my kids end up somewhere else, I don't think we would leave. I like the idea of taking future grandkids into the city at christmastime, beach days in the summer, etc...We have so much to do here on LI

Yes yes yes. I am so done with home ownership to the point is taking care of inside and out. I will probably want to own but not do outside stuff and feel like I am on vacation.
This is where I am right now.
My in laws just downsized to a gated condo community in Port Jeff Station. They purposely chose one that isn't 55 plus because they did not want pool restrictions for their grandkids.
I am SO freakin jealous of them. Their home is spacious, new, and beautiful with a nice size deck that overlooks a scenic pond and fountain. The deck is the only private outdoor space but it's fine - the kids can run around in the communal green space and as long as they are respectful and not too loud no one cares. They cannot hear a peep from the neighbors on either side of them and they only have to take care of the inside of their home. There are a few different amenities and the whole place is beautifully maintained.
I told DH if we stay on LI we are moving to the house next door. (I like my in laws just fine but it's about the property, not them!)

With everyone screaming that they can't wait to get out of here I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this concern. I know so many people who have moved to the South and are underwhelmed with what there is to do. My friend who moved to Florida is hot and bored and trying to move back.
I'm not crazy about the beaches here but other than that I love being near the city and the other amenities.
I'm not tied to LI in retirement at all, as I've said, but I definitely want a place with some life.

Skiing is one of the few things that will make me sad to leave - but I am in Western Nassau, and we have a house in the Catskills which is one of the closest decent skiing areas and it's 2:45. I don't think there is really great skiing in 1-2 hours of Long Island.
But there are plenty of other places with lots of fun things to do. I think you just have to find the right area for you. I am over the city. I like going to shows occasionally but it's such a small part of my life now. The only thing I really need is good proximity to a major airport so that I am easily able to travel!

I think most areas have things to do if you are in a suburban area. I live Upstate and all the things that you mentioned exist here. Just substitute beach with lake. And we are within 30 minutes of excellent skiing.
