Is anyone’s DD a daisy or brownie? I am trying to get an idea of the types of activities for these age groups (particularly daisies). I was a GS many years ago and have wonderful memories. The activities my DD’s troop does seem strange to me and I’m wondering if they’re actually strange or I’m just out of touch.

Thanks!

The goal of the Daisy level is to earn the petals, which correspond to the lines of the Girl Scout Law. So, the activities tend to be geared towards that. For instance, one line is "courageous and strong". For that one, we took a karate class. For "use resources wisely", everyone brought in some plastic bottles to recycle and we sang a song as we threw the bottles in the recycling bin.

It's been a while since my daughter was a Daisy, so I don't remember exactly what we did for each petal, but it's that kind of stuff. Hope that helps.

Same. We also tried to incorporate field trips that related to each petal.

Yes, I know about the petals. The troop earned 2 of them and I’ll be honest, I have no idea how. Most of the activities are not done on the troop level, but the service unit? And by activities, I mean “service projects” because aside from one nature walk, every activity has involved picking up litter from the local parks and train station. I’m starting to feel like they are using 5-6 year olds for labor around town and not much else.

That does sound strange. So you don't have troop meetings with just your troop and the leaders leading them? Usually at that level, since they're so young, it's easier in smaller groups of just their troop. I don't think we did any service unit activities at that age.

Maybe the leaders haven't gone through training and they don't know what to do themselves, so they're just doing the service unit events.

This past 18 months has been so difficult for Girl Scouts. The leaders were very limited in what they could offer and where they could offer it. We weren't allowed to have meetings in homes or backyards. Normally available public spaces like schools were off limits. We were not allowed to meet in person for a long time either.
Those types of service activities are pretty typical as well.

I agree it’s been a tough year. I don’t fault the leader at all-she’s actually a friend of mine. The parents do not make it easy on her and I do everything I can to help her with the meetings, buying supplies, etc. She is a saint as far as I’m concerned.

I was just surprised that there are no activities that don’t involve young children cleaning up cigarette butts in parks.
