Masking and children

IMO, if they are going to require masks, then do five and older. Masked two year olds are absolutely ridiculous.

Just wait until they come for the 6 month olds.
And people will still defend it.

My youngest has been wearing a mask at daycare since she turned 3 due to the requirements in my state. They don’t wear them while eating or sleeping and within the past several months, we could give written permission for the kids to not have to wear them outside.

It has been over a year with wearing masks. I wasn’t thrilled about it at first, but most kids seem to adapt really easily. There was a transitional period as well to get the kids used to it. I think it also helped for them to see everyone else in masks. At the beginning, it was difficult to get her to keep it on even if we went places where masks were required. Once she got used to the mask, she began putting it on without any issue. She doesn’t complain about wearing it.

Unfortunately, we have had positive cases at daycare throughout the pandemic. I’m unaware of any transmission between kids at daycare though. After going months without a positive case, we have had a few in the last month in different age groups. My child is currently home due to being in direct contact with someone who tested positive at daycare. All of my kids have been in quarantine at some point due to exposure, but I was most nervous about this one because kids that young seem most likely to not wear their masks correctly. She’s past the quarantine period and has had a negative test and we’re just waiting for her daycare room to reopen. I don’t know if kids this young just have a lower viral load and are less likely to spread the virus, if the masks actually worked or it’s a combination of the two. Regardless, this past year, the masks have certainly cut down on all of the colds/viruses that usually go around.

I'm actually worried my 3 year old is going to get sick more often now that she'll be dropping her mask on the floor and putting it back on her face. And the teachers will constantly be touching her face to put her mask on. There will be a lot more touching of her face now.

It's so gross. They'll be sneezing into the masks and then wearing them like that all day, drooling in them (the little ones), touching them, swapping them with friends, having them all over the floor.
It's unsanitary and totally gross and someone who is aware of SCIENCE and perhaps a medical professional should step in and tell this assh0le governor of ours just how dangerous this is.

Speaking from my experience only, we are asked to have at least 1 extra mask in their backpack or cubby and there are always disposable masks on hand. There are certainly times when the masks can get gross, but the dirty ones are put in a bag and changed out.

DD hasn’t come home with a mask that isn’t hers and I’ve never seen her in someone else’s mask. Masked or not, toddlers, preschoolers, etc. can often be unsanitary and gross. They can wipe their noses on their hands and then touch common surfaces or toys, not wash their hands thoroughly, not cover their nose and/or mouth when they sneeze/cough, put things in their mouth that were on the floor, etc.

I understand the concerns and I wish we could be done with masks for good. However, since they’ll continue to be around for a while, I do think many young kids are more adaptable than older kids and adults.

Great. Fine. Fantastic. But all of this ignores statistics and “the science” that covid poses almost NO risk to children!

They only trust the science when it's convenient to them...disgusting.

That could certainly be said on both sides. People throw around stats, studies, stories, etc. that support their argument.

As far as COVID not posing much of a risk to children, that’s not the only consideration in enacting mask mandates. It’s certainly not perfect, but masks can protect others and reduce transmission. While children are likely to have mild cases and recover quickly, they may pass it to a classmate and then pass it to others who are at greater risk. With the contagiousness of the Delta variant, the increase in positive cases in children along with other groups has gone up dramatically over the past few months. Masks at least provide some protection to others.

The vaccine should be doing that for those at greater risk.
That's the point of it I thought.
You shouldn't have to mask a 2 year old to protect a higher risk adult when ca vaccines are widely available.
That argument held water prior to the development of the vaccine.

Right, but the same people complaining about the masks on two year olds are almost always the same people who rail against the vaccine.

This is the part that makes zero sense to me.

There are 676k Americans dead but some people just want to... let death run rampant?

I don't think people understand the significance of that number. It's more US casualties than from WW1, WW2, and Vietnam. COMBINED.

It's cruelty and insanity at this point.

Rail against one friggin part of this, fine, but the "just let it infect everyone because I am going to push back on everything the government tries to do" is bonkers.

Just stop.
I am the first to say that the ones at risk should be vaccinated.
And stop with the nonsense about rallying against the government. Me not wanting this vaccine has nothing to do with the government. That just sounds ignorant to keep beating that drum.
And if I don't want to be vaccinated, it should be on ME. ME. If I get sick and die, oh well right?
It shouldn't be your concern and it CERTAINLY shouldn't be on a 2 year old to protect me.
There's something called free will.
Now that the vaccine is widely available I'm sick of the whole- well YOU have to protect ME.
No.
Go protect yourself, you have a good option for that now, and leave me alone.
Sorry but it's been almost 2 years now and I'm getting sick and tired of the nonsense with no end game.

I don't have to stop anything.

I wouldn't rip out the word ignorant when you are saying "if I want to die, oh well?"

That is your answer? You have a family. You have a child.

You really didn't address what I said, anyway.
Just let this be and do nothing? Take no responsibility?

I've tried to be nice but it's like the Angels of Death just come on here multiple times of day and complain about every. single. aspect of this.

"I won't do this. I won't do that."

You (general you) don't live in a bubble! The death and disease you all like to exchange affects other people.

I'm just so disgusted.

You don't know a thing about me so don't presume to and don't speak of my child or family.
honestly don't even speak to me.
I'm so disgusted too. SO DISGUSTED and SO DONE with morally superior people like you.
Mind your own business.
Go mask your child, vaccinate them on their birthday the second they are allowed to get it and you're safe. Don't worry about me or anyone else.
Protect yourself and shut up already.
Me and many many others are done being lectured.
