So what does everyone think school in NY will look like next September? Still wearing masks? Still social distancing? Still quarantining? Just curious what other people think.

Personally, I think Hochul is going to try to go out with a bang and it’s going to be even worse and she’s going to try and punish the unvaccinated kids by making them wear masks and quarantine.

I don’t think unvaccinated kids will be allowed to attend school in NY come September as Hochul wants a vaccine mandate.

Re: Schools September 2022

I think in NY they will mandate masks forever. Many many parents want this by the way. But I do think the quarantining will ease up once they force shots into kids arms.

What is the value in speculating or even worrying about what September 2022 will look like? Nobody has any answers to this question and SO much can change in the almost year until next September.

Live for today and stop stressing over a future that you have no control over. What a waste of energy.

Because some people are planning on pulling their kids if it doesn’t get better, myself included. I’m not subjecting my kids to this nonsense another year, they don’t deserve it while friends and families in other states are getting a normal education.

But even if you are planning to pull your kids, nothing on this thread will help with your planning and decision making as it is all speculation. No one knows what things will be like 9 months from now.

It's December 2021 - you're putting the cart before the horse in this case. For myself, I'm not wasting any energy on "what ifs" and speculations about the future.

To be honest, I 100% think most parents are full of $hit and when push comes to shove they aren't going to do anything drastic like pulling their kids from school or up and leave NY. Why? Because the actual reality is that most people are incapable of exclusively educating their own children AND they aren't able to just quit their jobs, sell their homes and relocate to start a new life.

FTR, my kids are having a fantastic year. Other than wearing masks, their school year has been completely normal and filled with after school activities, sports, events, socializing, moving around the building, parties in school, etc. It's NOTHING like 2020 and while every district is (of course) different in how they are handling things I do think there are many people who are up in arms mostly over nothing. People seem to just be riling each other up.

Just my two certs. Carry on with the outrage. Chat Icon

Exactly. The best you can do is make plans for either case and then decide when the time comes.
Random internet moms have no idea what’s in the future.

I think the only thing that would make me consider pulling her out of school is a vaccine mandate.
Masks, quarantines, etc suck but I wouldn't uproot her life over them. It's been going on for a year and a half now and it is what it is- she's fine.
A forced vaccine that I am 1000% NOT comfortable with ....that's another story.
But again- all speculation now anyway

I'm in NYC, so I think it's a little different, but I think it's far too soon to predict what September 2022 will look like.
Probably will still have masks- which I'm okay with- kids are doing fine with it- other than that and some quarantines, it's business as usual. I do think NYC schools will mandate the vaccine..which will be interesting. My DD had her 1st shot, and get's the 2nd next week, so we likely won't be too affected.

I'd be fine if it's like it is now - masked but in school. Virtual last year was a mess.

i predict kids will have mandated vaccine to start school or weekly testing to remain enrolled. I can't imagine they would mandate it fully. There will probably be an alternative like weekly tests or something.

eta: if they mandated the vaccine i can't picture many actually leaving NY... i know many don't want to do it, but it's really not that serious IMO. If they HAD to, i think many would. Just seems crazy to uproot your whole life and move OOS over a shot

This. School is pretty much normal except for wearing masks. They do holiday parties, have assemblies, work in groups, etc. my son’s school is only quarantining kids on the bus or if you eat at the same lunch table so barely anyone needs to quarantine at this point.

My kids school is completely opposite. Masks are strictly enforced, kids are threatened daily. Lunch at desks and yelled at if they move them the slightest bit. Parents can’t come past the vestibule. It’s terrible. My kids hate it. Maybe that’s why I will actually be one of those families who will move out of state.

From what I am hearing from friends and family moving isn't really happening. They are looking into homeschooling with the help of "pods" and other alternative programs.
I can't move now either.
I hope you are right about being given an option to test. I would get her tested 3 times a day if i had to to avoid vaccinating her.

I'm glad it doesn't keep you up at night but it does keep me up at night as it has a major impact on my children's future. The decision by our dictator is out of my control but how I react to the decision is within my control and I have to take into account all aspects of that decision (children's emotional well being, aging parents, etc)...

Understood however, worrying about September 2022 in December 2021 is absolutely pointless. There are no answers, there is no plan and there no way to know what next fall will look like.

Worrying about a future that may or may not be simply robs you of your peace today.

Maybe it’s easy for you to think this way because you are ok with how things are in school. Or you don’t mind vaccinating your children.

But for parents who have children in schools that are not doing a good job at normalizing school this is something to worry about. Or parents who will not vaccinate their children, this is something to worry about.

We have a governor who has already had health care professionals lose their livelihoods over a vaccine. She has made it very clear that she will consider a vaccine mandate. We have A mayor in NYC who is requiring vaccines. We have every right to be worried about September and to start planning so that our children will have a seamless transition into whatever decision we make. It is my job as a mother to worry about my children and their future.

I think that if someone is planning to potentially uproot their family because of a vaccine mandate it would be better to know sooner than later. From your posts on here it took years for your husband to find the right job in a location that you liked out of state. If someone wants to be set up in another state by the time school opens next year, realistically they have to start planning sooner rather than later. We are fortunate in that we already own property OOS and my husband and I both have positions that enable us to work remote, but I am assuming most families do not have those luxuries.

I wouldn't look at it as "worrying" as much as properly planning given the information that we already have right now and speculating how things will look in a short 9 months from now.

Chat Icon

She also does not live in NY so while there are many similarities, it is NOT the same there like NY.

She also has no problem with vaccinating her children so another thing that is not an issue for her.

September WILL come quickly as we are almost 2 years into this already.
