Figured I’d update: someone tested positive! I couldn’t believe it.
DH and I are good though

Glad you guys are okay. My vaccinated cousin tested positive yesterday. I haven’t seen here though, thankfully.

It is perfectly reasonable to have people test before gathering together indoors unmasked. We tested before going to my friends for dinner last night because her mother is 80 and unvaccinated and we didn’t want to endanger her. And my family tested today before coming to my house because we all wanted to be safe, especially for my four year old niece who is unvaccinated. Better than be safe than sorry, if you ask me.

Do you really trust those tests 100%? Even the ones at places can be wrong and those are by people who do them on a regular basis?
If places like jobs and travel doesn’t accept them, I would think it is because they are not reliable enough.

I agree!! It’s nuts!

My Aunt who is living with us in a separate area tested positive. My little guy had 1st vaccine Wed. He had sore throat but totally fine otherwise. My Aunt had mild cold symptoms, has had both doses, no booster.

We wound up cancelling a trip out west to visit my mom, brother and family. Lots of tears today~my son had been caroling with my Aunt on Sunday so I definitely I think true positive. Just so over this all.

It works if people are infectious in most cases. People need to test right before they want the results. Not day before or morning of. Like right before they walk out the door. You can be newly sick with Covid and not be infectious. This type of infection might be picked up by a PCR but it won’t be picked up by the antigen test though at that point because viral load is too low. Other countries like the UK use lateral flow testing (antigen testing) with a great deal of success.

Does it pick up every positive? No, but it does pick them up at a much greater rate than not testing at all. So far my friend, her son, my 2 nieces, my BIL x2 have all had a positive at home test confirmed by a PCR. They ranged from asymptomatic to numerous symptoms.

If its that sensitive why do people rely on it. If you test at 12:00 and your viral load is not high enough you will test negative but what about 4 hours later when you are sitting at families house and your viral load has increased to where you would now be positive? Should you test every hour? I'm not making light of people wanting to be safe but I think we are putting too much into everyone getting tested so often a negative test one day could be positive the next but you wouldn't know because you got your "negative" yesterday

The tests say they are to be used right beforehand and not the day before. They pick up when you are infectious. It is a screening tool for mitigation and is obviously not without flaws. That’s why people should be using several tools to minimize spread.

Well companies and hospitals and places where you travel don’t think they are accurate. I wouldn’t rely on them honestly.

I think people are just going crazy know with all of this. People are going to get sick and not everything is Covid. Other things are just as contagious and always have been.
People are starting to drive alone with masks on and it is insane.

Where does it end though? Testing every time you walk out the door? Did you do that before Covid and probably were sick but didn’t know until later on?

It's never going to end. If 3 vaccines aren't enough to make you feel safe seeing your family, nothing will be.
The point of the vaccine was, I guess, to mitigate severe illness and death. At least that's what they are saying now.
So if you get Covid it shouldn't be any worse than an old school flu, if that. Maybe even less severe than flu.
Were we this scared of catching flu at Christmas 2018? Did we require negative flu tests?
No.
But getting any kind of sickness now, even a scrarchy throat, is no longer acceptable.

This is why there are test shortages. Because people are testing constantly.

I don’t disagree with the idea of testing at all, but there aren’t enough tests to go around. At least until test production increases, people need to be more judicious in what they are testing for and if they are uncomfortable or if a situation is too high risk, they should avoid it altogether.

Using one test per family for Christmas, fine. But testing anytime someone may come into contact with another person seems like a waste of an already strained resource.

Honestly the only time my family has tested is for Christmas since it was a large gathering. I don’t know anyone testing “all the time”.

The real issue is that these tests are not available. In the UK, they are readily available and they have been for over a year.

Most of the kids were masked and people were really distanced. It didn’t have a family Christmas feel. Some relatives didn’t really even talk to us so I felt like I shouldn’t have gone (I really didn’t want to as we haven’t had a good track record of holiday gatherings the past few years but my mom wanted me to be there)

Life is not all or nothing - people who test in order to gather with loved ones are doing so to minimize risk to those around them with MINIMIZE being key. Like with most other things in life, you can't control things 100% so you do what you can to minimize risk or increase success. So, someone who tests before seeing loved ones isn't saying they trust tests 100% , they are saying that they believe the test results give them one more piece of information they can use to make the best decision for themselves and others.
Looking both ways before you cross the street doesn't guarantee 100% that you won't get hit by a car but you still do it.

Yup and people are running to the doctor for every little thing now, worse than they were before and many did that before Covid.
It is winter and the weather goes back and forth, people are more stressed over the holidays and eating routines sometimes go out the door. You might get a cold because you are running yourself down. But, but, let’s test 100 times and make these poor staff be overworked and then they get sick too so understaffed.

This is why there are test shortages. Because people are testing constantly.

I don’t disagree with the idea of testing at all, but there aren’t enough tests to go around. At least until test production increases, people need to be more judicious in what they are testing for and if they are uncomfortable or if a situation is too high risk, they should avoid it altogether.

Using one test per family for Christmas, fine. But testing anytime someone may come into contact with another person seems like a waste of an already strained resource.

Exactly. Just stay home and see if you get worse and THEN go to the doctor.

Honestly the only time my family has tested is for Christmas since it was a large gathering. I don’t know anyone testing “all the time”.

The real issue is that these tests are not available. In the UK, they are readily available and they have been for over a year.

They shouldn’t have to be as it shouldn’t be something you find the need to do constantly. No one tested for strep or the flu or a virus whenever they felt a little sick.

I think it’s fine - it’s just the waiting in crowded groups and on hours long lines that is being questioned.

I would have rather had to test than to deal with the strange awkwardness we had at Christmas Eve. Like we were all there but didn’t really want to be as we have gotten sick during non Covid times.

What kind of awkwardness did you have?

Most of the kids were masked and people were really distanced. It didn’t have a family Christmas feel. Some relatives didn’t really even talk to us so I felt like I shouldn’t have gone (I really didn’t want to as we haven’t had a good track record of holiday gatherings the past few years but my mom wanted me to be there)

Wow yeah that doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. If people are that paranoid, stay home.

It all makes no sense, honestly. You can always be sick with something and not know.

But it does make sense. It makes sense to those of us who agree with this poster. It doesn't make sense to those who don't take things seriously. That's all there is to it. You do you. But don't concern yourself with the folks who choose to be more cautious. If we want to spend our own money getting tested or buying at home tests before we go to visit with family/friends, that's our right. As much as it is your right to continue to repeat yourself over and over and over again.

Once again, sigh, no one ever said any of us don’t take this serious. We want to know when you will find an end to this. The next variant or the one after? The 4th shot or the 10th?
