Covid at home test kits
People on this thread make it seem like no one has Covid currently and that testing is ridiculous. I have barely known anyone with Covid in the last two years. In the last two weeks, I have personally at least a DOZEN of people with Covid. This doesn’t include all the people on my FB feed who have posted that they have Covid.

I don't think anyone needs to be tested if they aren't showing symptoms, at least not now when so many are sick and actually need the tests. But I don't agree with not getting tested if you have minor symptoms. I woke up yesterday with a headache and stuffy nose. Was able to get tested at city md- positive. I'm happy I know because now I was able to cancel my kids playdates this week and keep them home and away from others. If I assumed it was just a stuffy nose, I would have had kids in my house this week and exposed them.
I wake up almost every day with these symptoms. I guess I should have tested. I can't do lines and mass pandemonium though. But if this is Covid, I'll take it. Feels a lot like my allergies.
Exactly, not everything is Covid and why would anyone think twice to go and get tested with a runny nose? That could be anything and this is why we have such long lines at testing centers. Treat it like a cold and stay away from others and cancel plans you might have and wait it out a few days. I honestly think her test was wrong as she feels 100% today. Something doesn’t sound right.
My test was not wrong. My friend had COVID two weeks ago. Had a sore throat which made her get tested, she was positive. The next day her sore throat was gone and it never came back. It happens.
No other symptoms but a sore throat?
Most people have a fever, no sense of taste and/or smell, IME.
Not something normal and it goes away but you have covid.
I would be testing again if this happened to me.
The Omicron variant has different symptoms.
I tested positive on Christmas and had a PCR test on Sunday that confirmed my positive. I had a cough for 2 days and now only head congestion. I’m vaccinated so this has been super mild. No fever, no loss of taste or smell.

This. I don’t know many testing without symptoms. My BIL had 102 fever, fatigue, headache and stuffy nose. My sister said she felt like she had the worst hangover of her life with 102 fever and waking up in a pool of her own sweat. My pregnant SIL also has a fever, headache and is super dizzy. I’m pretty sure most people who are seeking out testing are experiencing symptoms. All my family members have jobs that require testing if you have symptoms. Don’t most non remote jobs require this? They’re all essential - teacher, cop, nurse.
I know many people who are testing as a way to justify large, private gatherings. They are essentially hoarding the at home tests and/or clogging the lines at urgent care.
I can see this in instances where families would see elderly or immunocompromised family members for the holidays. As a one off of sorts. But there are definitely people doing this regularly and contributing to the shortage.
I agree. Hoarding tests for any reason is wrong. We have a couple of test kits at home- literally 2 boxes. I wound up testing last week because I was exposed and had symptoms 5 days after being exposed. There were no appointments in Queens so I used one at home and it was negative but my symptoms were worse the next day -higher fever, chills, lightheaded- so I went Friday morning to urgent care. That was also negative. I wanted to confirm due to worsening symptoms and if I tested positive I would have to tell certain people - like my elderly in-laws- that they were exposed.
This was the first time I have ever felt the need to test and I have gotten sick a couple of times since last year.

People do have Covid and people are very sick in general but there are people hoarding tests and getting tests just because - which is making it hard for those who are sick to get tested or even receive medical care.
I hope with the shorter isolation period people will relax a bit about the testing and just stay home (as many are waiting longer than the isolation period for their results at this point).

Oh and since you now obviously have a medical degree— in addition to your epidemiology and political science degrees- please tell me Dr. Windy: When exactly IS it appropriate to test, if not in the situation I described above? Known exposure to someone who tested positive and then I developed symptoms like a high fever, fatigue, chills a few days later? What are the tests for if not this exact purpose??

Before Christmas my BIL and 2 nieces had Covid due to school exposure Christmas Eve my sister and BIL tested positive (my sister is a nurse and has been working with Covid positive patients) December 26th - my pregnant SIL tested positive (she’s a teacher - exposed at school) December 27th - my cousin and her BF tested positive. (They traveled from Seattle for the holidays)
None of these people saw each other on Christmas or Christmas Eve so these are all separate exposures.
Seeing as how my SIL and cousin saw people for the holidays, I’ll probably know more people with it in the next few days. I’m hoping all the older members of our family who saw them got the booster.

So basically a cold. Something that people can avoid others and stay home and treat and then go on their merry way like it used to be, 2 years ago. Instead of overwhelming doctors offices and hospitals.

Her answer will be to stay home anyway because wouldn't you always stay home when sick? What people don't realize is, nobody stays home for 10 days with a cold. Nobody can take off of work and isolate everytime they get the sniffles. It's important to know if your illness is covid because the protocols are different. I don't call everyone I've seen in the last 10 days and tell them I have a cold. But everyone did a get a call that I had covid so they could watch for symptoms. If there was school this week, my children would need to stay home. I don't keep my kids out of school when I have a cold. Whether people want to acknowledge it or not, covid is different.

Again you are misinformed. The latest variant does not have the common loss of taste/smell as in earlier variants, is less severe and does not last as long. Bad allergy symptoms is how it is described for MOST.

Well since I am not one that runs to a doctor unless I am very sick, I would have not tested and just stayed home, just like every other illness that was around 2 years ago.

It is perfectly reasonable to have people test before gathering together indoors unmasked. We tested before going to my friends for dinner last night because her mother is 80 and unvaccinated and we didn’t want to endanger her. And my family tested today before coming to my house because we all wanted to be safe, especially for my four year old niece who is unvaccinated. Better than be safe than sorry, if you ask me.
Do you really trust those tests 100%? Even the ones at places can be wrong and those are by people who do them on a regular basis? If places like jobs and travel doesn’t accept them, I would think it is because they are not reliable enough.
Life is not all or nothing - people who test in order to gather with loved ones are doing so to minimize risk to those around them with MINIMIZE being key. Like with most other things in life, you can't control things 100% so you do what you can to minimize risk or increase success. So, someone who tests before seeing loved ones isn't saying they trust tests 100% , they are saying that they believe the test results give them one more piece of information they can use to make the best decision for themselves and others. Looking both ways before you cross the street doesn't guarantee 100% that you won't get hit by a car but you still do it.
It all makes no sense, honestly. You can always be sick with something and not know.
But it does make sense. It makes sense to those of us who agree with this poster. It doesn't make sense to those who don't take things seriously. That's all there is to it. You do you. But don't concern yourself with the folks who choose to be more cautious. If we want to spend our own money getting tested or buying at home tests before we go to visit with family/friends, that's our right. As much as it is your right to continue to repeat yourself over and over and over again.
Once again, sigh, no one ever said any of us don’t take this serious. We want to know when you will find an end to this. The next variant or the one after? The 4th shot or the 10th?
Why do you care? Worry about yourself and carry on.
Well I care because I need to be tested weekly for work and I could be that person they run out of tests for. I care because I would like to live life normally and not have so many mandates and restrictions because people think NOW this shot will be the one that fully works, but it doesn’t and we never fully get back to normal.
But my at home test is not affecting you getting tested at urgent care. You yourself said earlier that the at-home tests are not accepted for work screenings.
And why do you need to test for work weekly if you have no symptoms? Because you are not vaccinated? If so then aren’t you part of the problem you are complaining about? Those tests could be used for someone who is sick and has symptoms.

Covid won't ever go away as it is a virus but the numbers will go down and things could get back to normal if people just did the right thing and stay home when they feel sick.

If there was school this week, my children would need to stay home. I don't keep my kids out of school when I have a cold. Whether people want to acknowledge it or not, covid is different.
Well the CDC thinks we only have to stay home for 5 days now so they seem to consider it a cold too.
Didn't you say you had NO symptoms the day after testing? Do you plan to test again?

Again you are misinformed. The latest variant does not have the common loss of taste/smell as in earlier variants, is less severe and does not last as long. Bad allergy symptoms is how it is described for MOST.
Well I personally know someone with covid right now and she said she has lost smell.
Yes, less severe, a cold for most people.

The Omicron variant has different symptoms.
I tested positive on Christmas and had a PCR test on Sunday that confirmed my positive. I had a cough for 2 days and now only head congestion. I’m vaccinated so this has been super mild. No fever, no loss of taste or smell.
So basically a cold. Something that people can avoid others and stay home and treat and then go on their merry way like it used to be, 2 years ago. Instead of overwhelming doctors offices and hospitals.
Most people are not overwhelming hospitals. I went to urgent care because I could - I had travel plans and didn’t 100 percent trust the at home kit.

Same here which is my my hackles are up at some of these comments. No doubt there are people who are unnecessarily hoarding tests or using resources to tear needlessly. However until now, no one I personally knew has gotten covid or was exposed to covid. However, over the course of the last few weeks, several close friends and family have been impacted. So it’s still out there. That does not mean we need to freak out or cower at home but… if I am exposed then I am getting tested. If I have certain symptoms then I am getting tested. That is what testing is there for.
Seems like some people think if people do not test then covid will magically go away…
Covid won't ever go away as it is a virus but the numbers will go down and things could get back to normal if people just did the right thing and stay home when they feel sick.
Numbers would go down bc testing would Go down. That doesn’t mean the virus isn’t spreading like wildfire, it means that the data isn’t accurate for true positives. Like closing your eyes and thinking nobody can see you. Ignore it and it will go away. That’s smart.

Tell this to my 27 year old sister who has been unable to get out of bed since a Christmas. “Just a cold” - okay.

Not.Everything.Is.Covid.
Her answer will be to stay home anyway because wouldn't you always stay home when sick? What people don't realize is, nobody stays home for 10 days with a cold. Nobody can take off of work and isolate everytime they get the sniffles. It's important to know if your illness is covid because the protocols are different. I don't call everyone I've seen in the last 10 days and tell them I have a cold. But everyone did a get a call that I had covid so they could watch for symptoms. Ding ding ding! Exactly. I do not understand she cannot understand this.
Oh yeah… she choose NOT to. So she can continue to act like a passive aggressive know it all and b!tch about the same thing every day.

Three different variants. This is exhausting. Stop saying MOST people fit your narrative.

Travel plans, yes, I totally get that as well as things that the majority of people were getting tested for.

I never said it would go away. It is cold and flu season so you ARE going to have a lot of people getting sick. More people are around others and other viruses spread. The variant seems to be less than back in March of 2020 so it is something we all just have to live with. We have to stop overwhelming the doctors and use common sense.

Drs offices and urgent cares are definitely overwhelmed. I tested both of my kids this week as they have a bad Cold and I got the last appts calling the second they opened. They are squeezing in more people than usual… i need recs for cough meds for DS and I can’t get through because the phones are ringing off the hook. Urgent cares are turning people away as they are overwhelmed with people testing. Places are running out of tests. I would assume people are going to the hospital as they can’t receive medical care elsewhere.
If you are sick, stay home. Regardless of whether it’s Covid or not
