6 Nassau Boces schools are remote this week.

Yes, I wasn't surprised to get the phone call. We have been so understaffed this year - and cannot get subs. It just isn't safe. Anyone need a job?

I think it was the right decision.

Districts remote week of 1/3?

Our district gave us an option between virtual and remote again this week. Remote learning is live instruction for the secondary level, so they are in fact learning what they would be if they were in school that day. I think elementary is different. Also a lot of teachers, bus drivers and staff are sick.

Re: Districts remote week of 1/3?

My sons school went remote. Obviously he wasn’t going but I still think it’s stupid. These poor freaking kids. My nieces Catholic high school is also partially remote with the stupid criteria that they need to be tested by the 5th to go back on the 6th. Although you cant get a PCR test and shouldn’t be testing with no symptoms.

People are stupid, these rules are stupidChat Icon Chat Icon

We are in person for now. Hopefully NY will shorten the quarantine requirements soon so that districts don't have these staffing issues.

Essential works have shortened isolation periods. My sister is a nurse and went back on day 8 - she still was symptomatic on day 5. My brother and brother in law are cops and went back on day 6. My district said you can come back on day 6 assuming no fever/symptoms for 24 hours.

The problem is it’s not consistent…I tested positive over the break…my job told me 10 days…my DH told his job about me they tell him no office 5 days…my poor kids whose school I informed today get 20 days from my positive test…they have no symptoms since I did my best to be away from them as much as possible but according to nyc doh this is the quarantine for exposure to people in household…and there’s no remote so my kids are basically doing nothing for 2 weeks.

that is crazy! DH tested positive on 12/23. He's essential at a hospital- they told him 5 days if no symptoms/fever. His symptoms lasted until 12/29 & he went back today. I tested positive on Christmas Morning, and my symptoms lasted until 12/29 too. We still have lingering coughs & congestion (plus we're freaking exhausted after doing anything). DD tested positive on 12/27- she had such mild symptoms that lasted about 2 days- I sent her back today. And I did not inform her school, since it's been 7 days since she tested positive and she never even had a fever. She was not IN school the week of Christmas (Ironically, i kept her home to avoid exposure so we could celebrate with family, which didn't happen LOL)

20 days? That's a lot - most people I know have had 10 days since the positive case (but they isolated).

Are you all vaccinated and have the booster? This is not the first time this has gone through your home, correct?

That's all she cares about. She has an unhealthy obsession with a vaccine she doesn't even want. It's bizarre.

It is something that NEEDS to be researched as why are some getting it more than once? Are these tests detecting other symptoms of other viruses? Why are 3 shots not protecting some people? Is it genes? Is it other issues they have? Is it their lifestyle?

Unless I am thinking of someone else, I swore you said both you and your husband were vaccinated and your husband at least had it once before.

Whether I agree with the policy or not, she should not be in school right now. Is she not under a 10 day quarantine order?

i guess techinically she is...she has since tested negative and between all the rules with our different quarantine dates, I didn't even really realize she's not actually 10 days out. (her & I home tested, so there wasn't an official record of it)

Districts remote week of 1/3?

DS 1 said only one teacher of his was out today. DS 2 stayed home since he was complaining his ear hurt and was congested (he's been congested since his last neg covid test but I figured they'd send him home - he has a sinus infection - and didn't wake up until after DS 1 was already at school).

I thought once you test positive, you are told not to test again for 90 days as you don't keep testing positive?

You originally just said above that you knew she was only 7 days out today.

Re: Districts remote week of 1/3?

Just got a letter from our superintendent and he said that
New York State officials have urged schools to stay open for in person instruction.

Whatever that means.

I guess Hochul doesn't want school closings on her head.

He listed a whole bunch of things like leaving the windows open in classrooms and no more visitors in the school.
I didn't read it all, I just got as far as schools staying open and that's all I needed to read

Districts remote week of 1/3?

So we just got a letter from our district with active Covid cases. All were reported during break. 168 students and 124 staff members. We have about 6000 students in total. Crazy, but school is open and so far we do not have any issues with coverage.

Re: Districts remote week of 1/3?

I think that the concern in closing schools is that once they close, they are done. It isn't just going to be for a week. Because not much will change in a week. In fact it may get worse. So it will linger on and on because no one will be able to figure out when it is safe to reopen. Everyone will be waiting for zero cases again. And then we will have a situation where kids have lost another 3-4 months of education, sports, and socialization. And oh yes - they will also have to admit the magical vaccine did not cure the pandemic.

I don't know what the answer is. My kids said today there were tons of students and teachers out. I don't know how staffing is even working. I don't want schools to close. But at this point I am so incredibly defeated and mentally and emotionally exhausted that part of me doesn't give a flying fig anymore. It is completely draining just to get through each day lately. Whatever happens happens. I'm out.

Honestly it's going to get to the point where life isn't worth living anymore.
So I'll just take my chances and if I'm meant to die of Covid, it's fate.
I honestly just don't give a fuk anymore either.
So sick of it.
Whatever.
My child was locked out of her school today for half a lunch period in the freezing cold so they could socially distance in the cafeteria.
Half of them had no coats.
They were locked outside like animals.
Actually animals are treated better. You'd report your neighbors for leaving a dog outside in this cold.
And these are the people in charge of our children's education.
I am in the process of finding an attorney.
And reporting them to the state for abuse.
So I have literally zero my fuks to give about this new head cold.
I don't care to hear the bullshitt about numbers or testing.
I don't care even a little anymore .
They are sending home tests and I'll toss them in the trash. That's the point I'm at. I'm so angry I can't even describe it.

I agree. It won’t be two weeks - at least a month. It will either continue to spike because people are still gathering or it will delay the inevitable spike.

Kids need to be in school. People were freaking out today in a nearby district because 200 staff and students in that district tested positive over break. They were up in arms that they sent their kids not knowing this. Those 200 individuals were likely not there unless they got their positives before Christmas. And those 200 individuals likely didn’t get Covid at school.

My kids were hybrid or full remote last year for 3/4 of the year and it was exhausting and trying… We need to try to keep schools open as long as staffing allows.

If our kids can go to Chuck E Cheese or Kalahari - they deserve to be in school.

ETA - none of this is good for a persons mental state. And I really dislike the people who say kids are resilient as now are the two year mark, it definitely has had a huge impact on their lives. Especially since last May/June we celebrated the end of the pandemic… and here we are…

I agree. The answer is not closing schools. As usual they are not reporting on the numbers that would let people make an educated decision. What we really need to know (for school purposes) is how many students/staff contracted Covid at school. That number, at least where I am, is extremely small. The majority of students they quarantine never get sick. That is what they need to be telling people. It does not matter if 1000 people in a district get Covid. That is because of what they are doing outside of school not during the school day. Social distancing and masks are enough to keep the kids safe in school as it has been shown for the last year and a half. If schools ever shut down again they might as well just have them repeat the year because they will be learning nothing and that is criminal.
