Re: Piazza

wow -- looks i missed some fun tonight

not gonna comment on the issue at hand, except to say that i was at the met game tonight -- piazza blew the game for us tonight. The man has outstayed his welcome. We need a guy who's gonna help us tie up the game or win the game for us, not ground into a DP and strand Floyd on first.

Yeah... he didn't come through tonight. Chat Icon

But I blame this game on Reyes. You MUST make that play in the 8th.

Another damm error kills another game for us.

Thats the difference between Reyes and Furcal... Furcal made the plays... and Reyes did not.

yeah, that whole thing stunk -- reyes needed to make that play -- it just would be nice to have someone consistent in the 9th that would have brought floyd into scoring position.

if i'm the mets, you don't trade piazza. Despite his current state, he gave us some good years, and you need to do the right thing and let him finish out the contract. Trading him makes them look bad. BUT, I wouldn't under any circumstance, look to sign him next year. Dude, he's 37, we need to build up the young guys, he's not what we need. He needs to be on a team with an exisiting young nucleus where he can help the young guys, be a DH, maybe hit 10-15 HR's and finish out his career.

They won't be able to trade him even if they tried since he is 10-5. But you are right about letting him finish off the contract. Its not worth the bad press.

Who do you think is going to catch for us next season? We have absolutely NOBODY in the farm at C thats even 2 years away... nevermind ready now.

Hernandez is going to command Varitek-type money. You wouldn't take Piazza if he signed with us for cheap... like 5mil if nobody else is available?

if we have no choice, then i guess we'd have to. But for the level we need to get to, I don't see him fitting into the plan

A "limited" Piazza at 5 mil for one lousy year IMO is a better deal than taking a chance on Hernandez who will demand 8-10 mil for at least FOUR guaranteed years.

I'll live with Piazza for one more year if he comes on the cheap. If he pulls a Leiter and demands more (like 8mil or up)... it was nice knowing ya!

My utter arrogance? Thats pretty funny knowing where its coming from. LOL Don't be ****** off cause I back up what I have to say with FACT.

With that said....

A 10-5 player is somebody that has at least 10 years of MLB service... and are with their current team for at least 5 years. Piazza is the only 10-5 player on the Mets currently. Jeter may be considered 10-5 if he already has 10 years of total service.

A 10-5 player can veto any trade the team comes up with... regardless if he has a no-trade clause or not.

This makes Piazza unmoveable. Case closed... plain and simple.

And it has nothing to do with me talking to you like you are an AZZhole. But if you want to talk FACTs... please know the facts first.

You can discuss what you may do if you were in the situation. I just balance what I would do with reality a little better.

While you say you would trade Piazza.. I could say if I was the Mets GM... I would have signed A-Rod, Vlad, Hudson, Manny, and just about every other all-star that becomes a FA. But we all know thats just a pipe dream.

I'd rather talk about more realistic options instead.

If the Mets want to dump somebody to get some value back... the choice is obvious.... Cameron.

Thanks for the 10-5 clarification...didn't need it but thanks.

And i think people can have a converstaion about how they feel about a player. YOU started this thread to ask "does anyone question why Piazza is the all star catcher?"

AND HELL YEA I DO.

You posted his batting stats didn't you? WELL to be honest his batting stats compared to OTHER BATTERS...IMO is SH!T. It is SH!T compared to his other TEAMMATES. I certainly can compare him in this way, whether he be a catcher or NOT. HE IS A MET PLAYER and a crappy one at that! His HR stats used to be 3xs better than they are NOW. He IS NOT a good catcher imo. Is he a good combination catcher pitcher? maybe. But
1. The mets have BETTER HITTERS THAN PIAZZA.
2. they can DEFINITELY AFFORD to replace him as a catcher.
1 nad 2 ARE FACTS as well as what i have said above. Piazza IS NOT the superstar he once was.
SO his presence on THIS TEAM IS AN UNECESSARY WASTE OF MONEY.

He is WASHED UP. HE no longer is anything he used to be.

SO back to the 10-5 BS. OH WELL that is an unforunate for the METS. Cause he drags them DOWN IMO.

Redhead... I am going to be as nice as I possibly can... without banging my head off the wall.

You keep saying he ***** compared to other HITTERS. Other Mets. He is past his prime... etc etc etc.

Why do you fail to compare him to OTHER CURRENT CATCHERS!!!!!?????

Please don't bother replying if you cant at least DISCUSS how he fares against OTHER CATCHERS. Thats what I was trying to say in my original post.

If Piazza has close to the same numbers that Posada has... does that make Posada washed up?

Piazza's contract is up this year. Posada still has a few years of that ugly contract to put up numbers you call are "washed up".

Re: Piazza

I understand what you are trying to say...
but if you want PLEASE FEEL FREE to bang your head against the wall

Posada was never the hitter that Piazza was...IN FACT i believe that the fact that their stats are similar is another reason why i feel Mike is washed up. He is actually doing worse than Posada at this point ...NO?

And if you want to compare catchers What about Jason Varitek?

Re: Piazza

Do I think Piazza is Washed Up? Sure.

Do I think Piazza is not even close to his former self? Sure.

Is Piazza still in the top 10% in catching offensive numbers and even being "washed up" deserved to start the all-star game based on this fact? SURE.

Re: Piazza

and like i said friday night rich, i am hoping we can get someone else next season. of course, if no one else is out there and he comes cheap, well that's just the way it goes.

But, the bottom line, he's not what we need going forward if we want to continue evolving

Let him finish out his contract and let's go our separate ways.

Re: Piazza

I personally think Mets fans have been spoiled with having major offense at the catcher spot for the past two decades (Carter / Sasser / Hundley / Piazza).

Once that is gone I think a lot of people will be like ***.

But thats a moot point IF they can manage to upgrade at 1B and 2B. Then you don't need offense at the C position.

Re: Piazza

dude,

spoiled???

for every piazza, and carter, we have been blessed with jokers like cedeno, vaughn, bonilla, matsui, agbayani, to name a few.

I truly don't think Mike will be missed.

ETA: I just saw the last line of that post, you kinda said the same thing I just did. I just don't think we have been spoiled

Re: Piazza

Ya know what I think?

I think that faaaaaaaaaaaar too much time and faaaaaaaaaaaar too many keystrokes have been wasted on a thread debating the pros and cons of (of all people) Mike Piazza Chat Icon

Well ok ... not THAT many keystrokes were wasted.. lets not forget those posts filled with statistics, that have been unnecessarily copied and pasted from other sites.. that to me, are really are not necessary to include in the context of any sports debate on a non-sports site such as LIFs..
