Well I guess if you get an epidural it's not that painful but I can't say because I didn't have one.
I had a natural, drug free birth and while it was painful it was pain with a purpose so it was a different kind of pain, the kind of pain you know you can get through.

I think it is a normal concern. I am concerned. I want to do it naturally as my mother did it that way with both me and my brother.

According to my mom and other people who went natural and drug free, it does hurt but time has a way of blurring your memory. Those who carry on and tell you how excruciating it was are just drama queens because it is not something you remember forever. If it was, people wouldn't do it again and again

Edited to say: This is not my opinion but the opinions that others have shared with me!!!!

I use to worry about the pain factor, now after days of non stop heartburn, dry heaving, and yeast infections, I dream of the day to come.

It is painful, I mean, the baby has to move all the way down from your uterus to your vagina, and that baby is MUCH bigger than the actual organ is...but a few things to remember, the human body can not replicate pain, so although it might be painful on the day, you won't physically remember it, so its just one day of your whole life! And once that baby is born, you forget the whole thing because your baby is so amazing!! My main thought about giving birth was that BILLIONS of women through the ages have given birth, so how bad could it be!!

I had an epidurial but they turned it down when it came time to push and I felt all of the pressure and it got to a point were I want the Dr. to just pull him and I told the Dr. I was never having kids or if I did it would be a c-section. She just kept telling me to push. Well once it was time to go home I said it wasnt so bad. The most painful part for me what the afterbirth. Even with all the pain I look forward to doing it all again. I never understood when people would tell me you just forget it, I couldnt imagine forgetting. Well in my case I did. I mean I still remember it being painful but not enough for me to never have another child.

I agree 100%. It's something you know you have to get through and you just do it. It's a very surreal moment anyway. Yes, it's painful, but you just get through it. I personally would take labor over pregnancy and healing afterwards 1000 times over.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?

I think it really all depends on your pain tolerance and how smoothly your delivery is going. I had a C-section, so I can't give an opinion on natural, but one of my friends had a natural drug-free birth and she said that she would go through labor a million times if she didn't have to go through 9 months of pregnancy.

Well I don't want to lie...I had a long labor and was 18 hours in to my labor before I had my epi.

The pain of the contractions was the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life.

I was 10 cm dialated before I had an epidural. Yes, the contractions were painful. They are hard to explain because it's a pain I had never felt before. The pushing is hard but not really painful. And, in the middle of my worst contraction, I would have done it all over again without hesitation.

The epidural gets rid of the pain of the contractions so that never has to become an issue for you if you don't want it to.

A\fter giving birth, I was surprised at how good I felt. I was never in pain after birth and at worst, felt sore.

Regardless of the pain, there is no other experience that can compare to bringing your child into the world.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?

everyone is different......the ONLY pain I felt is when they broke my water and before the epidural came! I was in tears!

During the induction waiting for my water to break was tolerable. The whole delivery....quite pleasant since I couldn't feel anything.

Recovery, again tolerable with Advil....the worst was going to the bathroom....it stung like a mutha!!

I'll let you know in a few weeks. The way I look at it, if it was really, really bad, so many people wouldn't have more that one child Chat Icon (at least that is what I'm hoping)

No I didn't think your questioin was dumb at all. I'm sure its a concern most pregnant women have. I guess I was trying to give my experience on the pain of birth without an epi. In the end you'll probably be so ready to get that baby out you won't think about the pain as much as you think you might. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I thought the same thing, but you find out you can handle more than you expected. I was 7cm before I got the epidural. The contractions hurt but I was still walking and talking, they were like very bad cramps. The pushing was fine until the epidural wore off and it was painful, but once he was out I felt great. That night I was telling DH that it wasnt too bad and that I want more.

Re: Is giving birth really painful?

Kathleen, I think you asked a great question. For those of us who have no had children yet, this is certainly up there in terms of fears. I think many women would love to be able to deliver a child in a drug free way (I hope to be able to do this) but if my discomfort adds to my stress causing distress to my future children in delivery, then its an epidural for me. I would like to take childbirth classes with DH to be ready for delivery regardless of how my children are to be delivered.

I agree.

But I've heard that the epi can give you pain too. My SIL had pain after the baby was born.

Honestly, the worst part is the labor. The delivery itself crushes so many of the nerves "down there" that you feel nothing but a release in pressure. And that's a great feeling.

What a silly thing to say. It was excruciating and I will remember forever, but it was just one day. You get to keep the baby a bit longer than that so thats the motivation to do it again.

Or maybe I am a drama queen. Chat Icon
