Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
Did you pediatricians try and encourage it? We are meeting with a ped group next week. I am nervous that they are going to try and push us to do it.
I don't feel like justifying it, or calling out DH while we are standing there to say he's not cut and problem free.
Do they tend to have a opinion, or do they stay out of it?
thanks!

The ped I have used since my DD was born was very pro-circ, he tried to give us false info to go ahead and do it. He even told me DS would have emotional trauma if he wasn't circed . Anyway, most doctors will keep their mouths shut and respect your opinion. With the circumcision rates around 50/50 they are bound to have other intact patients. One thing you have to watch for is forcible retraction. A lot of doctors will try to retract them, and it is very painful and causes damage. When you have DS make sure whoever is checking him knows not to retract. You don't know how many times in the hospital I had to stop someone from doing it.

thanks stephanie! that's what I have been reading as well. To never have anyone pull it back. My MIL swears it needs to be done, but I have never seen anything to back that up.

same for me... In fact, my OB told us that if she knew then what she knows now, she probably wouldn't have circumcised her son.

YW. And really watch for the doctors, they will try to tell you that they are going to gently pull it a little. They should not be touching it at all. I've gotten to the point where I do not let them take his diaper off. Here is a link from the AAP. It tells you everything you need to know.

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
The ped I had at the time recommened it so he could be the same as his daddy and the whole gym locker thing. Even though DH is cirm. DS is not. I told my DH it was up to him and he could not make a decision so while they were admitting me and asking me a whole bunch of questions while I was in labor this was one of the questions and I asked DH again and he said he didnt know so I told the the nurse no. If their was no medical reason for it I didnt want it done. It did bother dh a little a few months ago and he wanted me to look into getting it done so DS is the same as him but he never brought it up again. People are so different in so many ways and I think it is is important for a parent to explain that to their children so they accept it. My bothers arent circ because my dad never was (he was born in europe so that is not customary their) and my one brother had a hard time accepting it my other brother never talked about it.

Mine is circumcised, but it's a personal choice whether you want to do it or not. Noone should pressure you into doing it.

It was very unprofessional for the doctor to say that if he wasn't circumcised that he would have emotional trauma. That's a horrible thing for a Doctor to say to a parent.

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
DH isn't sure if we he wants it to be done or not. We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl. He is cir but he thinks it is an unecessary procedure. I kinda want it done, but have no real reason why. Can you ladies help me out with how you made the decision not to get it done? Both of our moms want it done. But my dad said it's up to ush and DH doesn't really have a relationship with his dad.
Help!

My son was born perfect just the way he is. I didn't want to sign him up for a surgery that is painful and genitally altering just because KWIM?

HEre is a circumcision video. I started to watch it and couldn't make it through. THats when I realized if I couldn't stand to watch it I shouldn't sign my son up for it. GRAPHIC

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
I had my two sons circumcised and don't regret it. my second son the doctor used a plastibell procedure, it was over in two seconds and they didn't have to tie him down. I watched part of that video and was horrified....how that doctor can sleep at night toturing little babies if beyond me. Any way don't let any body pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Stand your ground.

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
While i feel anyone should make any choice they want to and not be judged for it, here is my husbands reason for being pro circumcision:
He basically told me he'd like it done because well, he is...every male in our families have been...i guess its more a traditional thing?? I know it sounds weird to think of it that way...an unnecessary surgery causing some pain to your child...BUT...like DH said to me "babe i don't remember it and neither will johnny".
I know that sounds awful in a way....and i cried and cried after it was done because my son was one of the rare ones to bleed...but shortly after it he was calmy sleeping and didn't seem phased by it whatsoever when we changed his diaper. At one point where he had fluid swelling around the penis i questioned it, but he is perfect and happy and its a normal circ. Hope this helps...

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
thanks all. We definitely are not going to circumcise the baby if its a boy, I just don't want to justify myself to any doctors. Thanks for all the input, so bascially if dr leans towards cutting, I should find another one.

That video was horrible! Alex was born in Ireland so he isn't circumcised but were weren't planning on doing it anyway. After seeing that video I am so glad we didn't and any future sons born will be left as is. I couldn't even watch the whole thing.

Re: Moms of sons who aren't circumcised
That video is the reason we decided not to do it. I had nightmares after I saw it and I didn't even finish it! I personally think anyone who plans to circ NEEDS to watch it. The descriptions of a circ don't even remotely show how gruesome the procedure really is.

After watching the video I am sure we will not do it as well if we have a son. When the time comes Iw ill show DH this video. I literally threw up watching it.
