Question about potty training boys...

Um...

Do you start them off sitting or standing?

If sitting, does that mean you have to teach them to uh...tuck it in each time? Chat Icon

Omg I am so clueless it's embarrassing. Chat Icon

I just read that post about potty training and it struck me that I do not have a CLUE where to being potty training Jake and that it's probably not too far off so I better get a clue soon! Chat Icon

Sitting until they're older (2.5-3). Even a 5 year old doesn't have the best aim....and when they're drowzy in the middle of the night...forget it.Chat Icon

Re: Question about potty training boys...

My DS never sat to pee. He will pee if he's sitting to poop and he tucks it himself. Im not sure if DH taught him that or not but it's a interesting "male trick" that I was not privy to. Which is why I think its good that the boys learn from Dad too. I told my DH to teach my DS how to wipe himself after he poops since I am assuming that men have their own method vs. women.

you think so? Hmm... never though about it!

I did tell Dh to show Benjamin how the boys pee and he has been fascinated ever since...Chat Icon He is clearly interested of how and where things are coming out.

Now if only he would try to do it himself...Chat Icon

If you start out teaching him sitting most potty seats come with a cup that you can use or remove(for a girl). The cup is to shield the pee so it doesn't spray all over.

Jack tucks it in on his potty chair but he's got a big ole bum so sometimes if his bum isn't far enough back it gets all over the tile so I can't wait till he reaches the standing stage, but he goes to the potty with Dad everytime he can when he is home and is amazed by the stream.

Re: Question about potty training boys...

If the boy is young, I say sit and pee, that way it's less of a fight to get him to poop. Gianni is being shown to sit.

Re: Question about potty training boys...

What age did everyone begin potty training?

I was thinking of starting to potty train DS @ 18 months... but he really dosent say much- and Im not sure how he would communicate him having to go potty.... (I know language explosion happens at 18 months... so by the time it hits- it may not even matter)

I think it depends on the child... Nate will be 20 months and shows no interest in using the potty. To help him make the association, I recently started asking him if he's "making poop" when I see him doing it in his diaper (he usually leans on something or squats).

Well Jack has a hearing and speech problem so we have communication issues here and he is a really good with the potty. We started at 19 months, he is 20 now.
For us it depended alot on Jack holding his pee more then speaking that he wanted the potty. Dh was freaking out that he was dehydrated because he figured Jack would be wet and wasen't and it was because he was really good at holding it till he was ready and then would go like a champ.
Also when he would go he would wait and run into the dog's crate and poo and pee in his diaper there so we just tried to show him.. no not the crate...the potty.....

It is cool, but I told him we'll still need to get him a regular potty so he can poop. We don't have enough wall space for both.

Well, first I bought the potty and let him play with it. It sings..
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4241540

He would flush and open and close the lid. It was more like a toy. He would sit on it, etc. I tried to get him to sit on it without his diaper but he would cry. I guess he wasn't ready. Then one day he said he had said "pee-pee". So I walked into the bathroom with him and took his diaper off, sat him down and he went! Then he asked about 10 times that weekend and he went every time.
He still asks but now he wants to go on the toilet!
He asks when he wakes up and many times during the day. He still uses his diaper but he is very interested in going and cries if I don't bring him fast enough if he asks. If I was home I would also sit him down consistently every few hours. I bet he would be completely trained soon!
I am very proud of him because he showed the interest.

WOW, you should be proud!!! Benji is not into it!

I think I would have bought the flushing potty instead of the one I have. I have been taking him to the bathroom with me to pee and Dh has been doing the same and Benji loves to flush the toiliet and wash his hands afterwards. Unforunatelly, that's all he does!Chat Icon

He will not sit on the potty without the diaper. How did you get Justin to say pee-pee. Where you doing anything in particular to get him interested?

My niece (she is 3 weeks older) started going and my mom watches both of them. I think he was interested because she started going. He learns everything from her! He just did it one day. I really didn't have to do much!

Yeah, you are probably right.

I'm glad to hear that you haven't started with Nate yet.

I'm waiting until Jake shows some sign of interest or being able to communicate about it before pushing it on him.

I mentioned buying a potty to another BTDT mom and she said "don't make the same mistake I did - don't start them before they are ready because you only make it harder on yourself and on them." I don't know how true that is but it seems to make sense.

I think it makes sense... If you try to force them to use it they might resist big time.

This post really has me thinking.... If you have more than one bathroom, do you buy a potty for each? We have one upstairs where are our bdrms are and on the 1st floor.

That's a good question too... I would probably buy one for each if he will have easy access to both...

I have 2.5 baths but he doesn't have access to the downstairs and the half bath so I'll only be getting one.

Re: Question about potty training boys...

We started with my DS at 2 yrs old. On and off. When he would get resistant, we'd back off. Sometimes for long periods. Then revisit, try a new trick, reward etc. Ultimately he just decided when he was ready. He was 3 in Oct (05) and was fully PT by Nov. When he was ready, he was ready big time. An accident here and there but I can count on one hand the times he had accidents. It really was an interesting exercise in letting them be their own person....and it was amazing to see the readiness.
