Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
DH and I are looking for a house and the farthest east we are considering is Holbrook and Ronkonkoma, but I don't know anything about the areas.
Is there any place I should look at or should avoid?
TIA!

I looked in both areas, and I didnt see any "bad" areas of either, but there were definitly parts I liked more than others.
I love New England Village in Holbrook.

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
like most towns on LI both of those have a few neighborhoods that are extra nice looking & other parts where some of the homes aren't all kept perfectly. When we were looking in Ronkonkoma I spent a lot of time driving all around to see which neighborhoods in particular would appeal to us. I don't think either of those towns would be considered as having bad parts though.

we are moving to Holbrook but we also wanted Ronkonkoma/Holbrook anyway. I personally don't know of any bad areas, but some are more desireable then others just like any town. I wouldn't say there are any areas were security is an issue though, both are relatively safe.

I'm not a huge fan of either town but I wouldn't say that they are bad. You might want to check into what school district you fall into in those towns first. Some parts are Sachem others are Connetquot.

I've lived in Holbrook for 28 years and I can, honestly, say that there aren't any "bad" areas here. There are areas, however, that are considerably older than the one I live in (New England Village). This is a great place to live and to raise children. I highly recommend it.

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
I live in Holbrook, in the part north of the LIE close to Lake Ronkonkoma. I really like it here. My neighborhood is nice, everyone is friendly and there are always kids outside playing, people walking their dogs, etc. I walk and run in the neighborhood and love it.
The only part of Holbrook that I personally would avoid is close to the airport. We are not as close where we are and we can hear the planes all the time. But if that wouldn't bother you, then I think there aren't any bad areas.

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
I've lived in Holbrook for over 30 years and love it. I don't think there are bad "areas" but bad "houses". I also live near the airport and you don't hear airplanes once living there for awhile. There is everything around here to go to in a few minutes time.

I grew up in that area and I would recommedn Holbrook over Ronkonkoma...JMPO. Not that Ronkonkoma is a bad area by any means, I just happen to like the small town feel of holbrook. Also check out the SD, b/c I think some is Connetquot and some sachem.
Good luck!

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
Everyone keeps saying see if it is Connetquot or Sachem--is one considered significantly better than the other, or is it just a matter of preference? From what I've read, scores are similar, but Connetquot is considerably smaller and Sachem is very large--is that the only difference?
I guess I am looking for anecdotal information as opposed to the numbers I have seen while researching to see which is better.

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
Both Hobrook and Ronkonkoma will be affected by the Brookhaven Lateral Project. You may want to check maps and see how near any house you are looking at will be to it. In Ronkonkoma it will be running North of the LIE but South of Portion Rd until Ave C then it will 'cross under' (if they get approval) and run along LI Ave. If it does not get the approval then it will continue running North of the LIE and South of Portion Rd. I think I still have maps around the house if there is an particular street you would like me to check on.

I live on the south side of Holbrook and it is very nice over here. We are not going to be affected by that.

I am sorry I wasn't trying to imply that the areas were not nice. I happen to like both areas very much.
I am just trying to save anyone who is looking in the areas from going through what we and the residents of Hauppauge, Commack, parts of Islip are going through-- Having a huge gas pipeline carrying enough fuel for 300,000 homes running 20 feet from my front door or across the playground of their child's school.

Re: Are there good or bad areas of Holbrook and Ronkonkoma?
For those of us who are unfamiliar with the Brookhaven Lateral Project, here's the company's site with info: http://www.iroquois.com/new-Internet/igts/Brookhaven/brookhaven.asp
I lived in Holbrook for a little while, and now live in Ronkonkoma. I like both areas, and don't have any problem with either town, but I personally prefer Ronk. because of the areas that I'm familiar with, the Ronk properties seem bigger, with more diverse styles of houses. I'm not saying that's better or worse, or even pertains to large areas of either town, but that's what I've noticed, and my preference.
We prefer Connetquot schools because the district is smaller. We're hoping that DC won't get lost in the shuffle at a smaller district. I've heard stories about 100 kids trying out for 20 spots on a sports team at the bigger schools.
