Air travel and (larger) pets!
To do it or not?
We spend time at my parent's house in Florida every year and usually leave our dog with my sister. We really want to take her this year (we'll be going for at least ten days). But she's big so she couldn't actually come into the cabin with us and the idea of her traveling as cargo terrifies me. I could leave her with my sister again no problem, but I'd love to bring her so she could see her birth mother and sister (breeder lives in Florida). Not sure what to do. Does anyone have any info on the best airlines for pet travel? Any personal experience?

I'll be honest- if you can avoid shipping her in the belly, you should. It's understandable/unavoidable if you're absolutely needing her to be somewhere (i.e. showdog, moving, etc), but just to visit somewhere, it's not worth the stress it will put on your dog.
The belly of the airplane is dark, it's loud, and likely to be pretty frightening. The whole process of going from the ticket counter, to riding the luggage pallet to the plane, then being loaded, the flight itself, then unloaded, can be very upsetting to an animal.
Most vets will prescribe a tranquilizer to calm your pet, so if you do need to ship her, make sure you get something to knock her out.....

What about driving down? It might be less stressful - then again it might be more stressful for you.
If you do bring her (I would want to also for that long a period of time) I would definitely look into some sort of tranquilizer for her.

Oh boy, I have heard so many negative stories about this. If it were me, if you have a place to leave your dog, I would do that or drive. It is just something i would never do, putting my dog in cargo.
