When school is closed....

I'm not sure if this is the right board, but for those with school-aged children....what do you do when school is closed? We don't have any family here (we are in NJ) and not really any friends. Whenever school is closed, either DH or I have to take off work to stay home with DD (she's 9).

For example....school starts Wednesday, we have off on Monday for Labor Day, but one of us has to take off on Tuesday. So frustrating. How do I go about finding a sitter?

She attends the after school program that is run by the town...when I asked them for recommendations...they told me to hang a flyer on the community board.

Re: When school is closed....

what about through a local church or the local library? I think there are websites that have a list of babysitters and their credentials are checked. Maybe it's babysitters.com or somethiing.

Ask neighbors that have kids if they know of a good sitter?

Re: When school is closed....

do you have a local newspaper? we get a paper called the Community News....they always have listings for local SAHMs who babysit. I would also ask at the church, synagogue, etc......

I'm not there yet (4 year old & 2 year old)- and while I have a back-up I'd prefer to be somewhat independent. Tell me what you think of my master plan:

Enlist other working mothers into a co-op that will take turns taking off for snow days.

I'm going to talk to the teacher to see if she knows other working moms. Maybe put a message board together for the elementary school. None of us can take off all the time (although I can work from home) - and none of us want to pay for additional daycare, right?

What about spending the day at a friend's house? Taking in an extra 9 year old to keep my own housebound 9 year old entertained would be welcome.

Maybe you can trade midweek services with a SAHM for a Saturday.

Re: When school is closed....

I have the same problem. I try to work the days between me, my dh and my sister. It is HARD and a BIG pain. I am also want to look into a teenage girl who will have the same days off and will watch her.
I don't think the working mom thing will work for me as in my dd's Kindergarten class, there was only 2 mothers, me and another mom who worked out of 21 kids!!

They are quite expensive though. My friend uses them and said they are over $40/day and her daughter hates it!!

My son goes to the after school program run by the school district. They are also open on the school holidays and vacations. Maybe your after school program has something like that available?

That's the problem....she goes to to the afterschool program run by the town....but they are closed when school is closed Chat Icon Chat Icon Makes no sense....you would think those days they would be open as the point of using them is for parents who work! This stinks.

I have 6 vacation days left for the year...and I just put in my request today to take off all the days she's off until December. I hate having to use all my days off when she's off from school....I don't get to use them for "me" time Chat Icon

The sugesstion someone had about staying at a friends house. The only 2 friends she really plays with outside of school...1 of them has 5 older brothers/sisters and their house is always a free-for-all. Not sure I would trust that the mother would "watch" them. The other one...her parents work also.
