Weekend(s) Project - Raised Garden Beds
We decided to do a raised garden this year (thanks KellyFG!). After lots of research we went with 4x10 cedar (unfinished/treated) and made 4) 4x4 boxes...and had topsoil delivered from Prianti Farms in Dix Hills. We plan on getting more slate slabs for the pathway and covering the grass, on said pathway, with bluestone gravel.
Can't wait for everything to start growing!!
Boxes built...
View from firepit (that we did a few weekends ago)...
All filled 
Filled with:
3) San Marzano plum tomato, 1) Mortgage Lifter tomato, 1) Supersweet 100 cherry tomato, 1) Beefsteak tomato ...Bush beans & Hybrid Cucumbers...Boston lettuce, Collards (for the tortoises), Mesculin mix, Salad bowl mix...Red bell peppers, Orange pepper plant...Basil, parsley, cilantro, dill, peppermint (couldn't find spearmint  ), cat mint, Greek oregano.
We have some space in the herb box so we might move some things around...we read after that we should plant the bush beans in front of the lettuce b/c lettuce likes things cooler...and we might add some more herbs.

That's great, congrats! I've always wanted to do raised beds. Did you put any landscaping fabric down to keep weeds to a minimum? Also, if you don't mind me asking, how much was the topsoil?
I can't do this stuff now but I'm bookmarking the thread for later.

No, we didn't put any landscaping fabric down - you want the roots to grow. You could put newspaper down, but we didn't. The beds are 10" deep and are filled with a topsoil/compost mix. Prianti Farms in Dix Hills delivered 3 yards - it was $25/yard and with a delivery charge, came to $119. We used 1/2 yard per box...we used the rest of the soil in other beds.
The most expensive part of the project was the wood - cedar is costly but should last (for some time, at least). We opted against pressure treated wood b/c some people feel it leaches into the soil.
It was a fun project and we joke how we will have the $82 tomato (there was some book about the $60 tomato wrt building a garden and such) but nothing beats a tomato from the garden
I honestly have to give all the credit to my DH - he researched everything, built the boxes and dumped the soil LOL I just picked the "pretty plants"

GREAT JOB!!!!
We added another box this year too. My seedling are still in the greenhouse, hoping to get them in the ground in the next week or so.
I still need to plan exactly where I'm planting everything.
I quadrupled the amount of lettuce I grew last year because it didn't last long enough to eat it with my tomatoes.
The book "the $64 tomato" is great.
There is another really enjoyable book called "this organic life" Joan Dye Gussow
She includes great recipes from things in her garden & its amazing how much she grows in a small space. Its a great summertime, backyard read.
Can't wait to watch all of our gardens grow!
I LOVE the firepit, we have one & we use it all the time in the summer.

I was watching Gardening By the Yard on HGTV (love love love Paul James) and he had a tutorial on planting boxes.
He said the longer the lumber, the more likely you will get warping in the middle of each piece of wood.
But it looks like you used some good sizes, where that probably won't be a problem. Kelly, you've had your beds over a winter already, right? Do you see any problem?
Thanks for the info on the cost, I really had no clue whatsoever how much soil costs. I could easily drop double that in one trip to a nursery.

our original boxes spent one winter outside & they are perfect. We moved them a bit so I emptied them-turned the soil into the grass in tat area & I'm adding all new. I do the exact recipe from the sq ft gardener, its compost(this year I'm using mostly my own), potting soil & perculite(sp).
I hope to get the dirt in the boxes & plants in the ground by memorial day.
Also hoping to get the butterfly house built this weekend so I can go buy them.

 I was tired last night when I typed butterfly house, I meant ladybug house for pest control, but we are building a butterfly & bat house as well.
DH is planning on working on them today since its crappy out.

AWESOME!!!
I can't wait to do this next year. I LOVE vegetable gardens...always had a huge one growing up upstate.
We just bought our house in March and are still working on sooo many projects that it looks like our veggie garden will have to wait until next year. Plus...we have SOOOOOOOOOOo many trees that I have to see where I can find some sun!

Well we decided to give it a try this year. We had the wood in the garage so I banged together a 4 x 4 box. We planted grape tomatos , beefstake tomatos, red & yellow peppers and some marigolds. I have chives and basil in a planter. Has anyone found rosemary this year? I have been to 3 nurserys and no one has it. Happy Gardening everyone

it looks great. we use the black weed plastic and the roots still grow and NO weeds. just from tree's and grass cuttings you can get weeds. also is this your first garden? tomato's grow out wide, make sure you gave yourself enough room for them. cucumbers grow best up and need support like a fence, they are best up against a fence. best of luck, veggie gardens are awesome!!!!
