Repost: If anyone can offer advice and or info I would really appreciate it.

My FIL is turning 75 this yr and he is adopted, all his life he has wanted to know about his birth family. He was told I am assuming about 50yrs ago that its a sealed case and that when all the parties are deceased maybe they can open it. Is there anyway to do this now, I cant imagine both parents still being alive. Where would I even start? He was adopted in Manhattan.

Do you know what his name was at birth? I had actually done research for a friend and located his birth parents. He was adopted from an orphanage in Canada and his sisters were looking for him... if you have his name try googling it. Add adopt-adoption-NY and so on in google and it may help! Good luck!

If he was adopted in Manhattan then he was probably adopted in Manhattan Family Court on Lafayette Blvd. You can try to call their vidal records department and see if they will release the information. It usually helps to know the docket number or judge (if possible) but I am not sure if you'd have that given that it was so long ago.

Don't know how far back they go but we got all sorts on information on my DH who is adopted just by writing to the state. Put a search in for NYS adoption information and see if anything comes up. We found out his birthparents names- illnesses, etc... that ran in the family...
