NYC New Hire Instructional Orientation
Anyone know anything about this? is it mandatory? Are you going to go?
INSTRUCTIONAL ORIENTATION - The purpose of this component of the orientation is to introduce you to the NYCDOE's instructional priorities and initiatives that will most directly impact you as a teacher. You will have the option of attending the instructional portion of the orientation on either Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21 OR on Thursday, August 23 and Friday, August 24.

Re: NYC New Hire Instructional Orientation
I got one, but since I am not taking the job in the city I'm not going. I think it is mandatory. It seems like it from the email.

It isn't mandatory. I went last year and found out the hard way it wasn't. You can go one day and not the next. But... I found it helpful to review programs I would use but boring because some sessions where about how to set up a classroom.
YOU DO GET SOME FREE STUFF!
As for the overall experience- you do get breakfast and breaks with free things. B-

This is the e-mail that I got. I had already known about the welcome event, that is the one that is at the javitz on the 22nd. I am talking about the Instructional Orientation.
here is the e-mail:
Dear Teacher,
Welcome to the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE)! We believe that teachers are the most important factor in a child's educational success, and we are grateful that you have made a choice to bring your talent and experience to our city's school children. It is an especially exciting time to become a teacher in New York City as we are in the midst of the most significant school reform effort in the nation.
To help you be as prepared as possible, we are pleased to invite you to the New Teacher Orientation that will be taking place during the week of August 20-August 24. There are two components to the orientation: one-day welcome event and a two-day instructional orientation. You should plan on attending all three days, although you have a choice of dates and location for the instructional orientation. Below is a brief description of the content of the New Teacher Orientation and directions on how to RSVP.
WELCOME EVENT The New Teacher Welcome will take place on Wednesday, August 22 at the Jacob Javits Center in midtown Manhattan. This day will serve as an introduction and welcome into teaching in the NYCDOE. You will have an opportunity to hear from the Chancellor of the NYCDOE, Joel Klein, and President of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), Randi Weingarten as well as other educational leaders. Additionally, representatives from the NYCDOE and the UFT will be presenting workshops on critical employment related topics including Health Benefits, Salary, and Certification. Throughout the day, there will also be a teacher resources fair with representatives from educational services, programs and vendors that can benefit you and your students. Needless to say, as the cultural capital of the country, New York City has a wide array of resources that can help you enrich your classroom and teaching. The event will kick-off at 8:00 am and will extend until 3:00.
INSTRUCTIONAL ORIENTATION The purpose of this component of the orientation is to introduce you to the NYCDOE's instructional priorities and initiatives that will most directly impact you as a teacher. You will have the option of attending the instructional portion of the orientation on either Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21 OR on Thursday, August 23 and Friday, August 24. In addition, during the two days you can choose among several topics to attend workshop sessions designed to help you sharpen your skills in preparation for starting teaching in NYC. For your convenience, there is also choice of location among sites in Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan or Queens. When you register you will be asked to select the dates, borough and workshop topics. Please note that registration is on a first come, first serve basis and that certain sites and days may fill up quickly. Please RSVP as soon as possible.

I asked my recruiter and she said that it was mandatory unless you had a really important reason that you couldn't go....

Re: NYC New Hire Instructional Orientation
i just got my email today. i am annoyed at the last minute notice. the 22nd is my last day of camp (where i'm working for the summer) so i can't go to the welcome orientation. i'd actually like to go to that to hear about benefits and stuff.
i guess i can go to the instructional one on the 23rd and 24th but i don't feel like i need it. i taught the entire year last year doing a leave replacement in the school where i'm working come september. are the freebies worth going?

So the instructional orientation is mandotory or just the Welcome on the 22nd? Or both?
