my manager made a big stink out of thank you's when he was interviewing me, so i learned my lesson. ( i was laid off from my last job and a good friend of mine also interviewed for another position with my manager and he didn't get hired because he didn't send a thank you)

I always sent TY emails. you don't need to send an actual card, an email is fine IMO.
I only didn't send a TY 2x... they were jobs that I would have never wanted.

i voted for only if i want the job but its not entirely true - it's more like i send a thank you unless i know for sure that i do NOT want the job.
I recently went on an interview where the owner of the company made a point of meeting with me first - saying that she feels its important right from the start to meet the candidate rather than towards the end after other people have screened them. okay, fine. so I meet with her for maybe 10 minutes - she cuts me off mid sentence and tells me she wants me to meet with someone else now. so i do, and i don't see the first person again.
she was a strange cookie to begin with. it was march and freezing that day and in making small talk, i said something about how nice it was to be in a warm office. so the owner goes "yes, well I spent extra money on our heating system to keep the girls here warm. it was very expensive."

Only if I want the job.
I just went on an interview and knew it wasn't for me and didn't bother. I didn't get it, but didn't want it so no sweat.
If you want a job, I think it's a must. If you are ambilavent, then it will show.
