DH has high cholesterol.....how do we change our diets?
I know to cut out fatty and fried foods (which we don't really eat anyway) and to cut back on red meat and he has to eat more chicken and fish.
What else should I be cooking/buying to help?
Do I look for low fat in general or no trans fat or do I look at the cholesterol content on the label???

Try to avoid Frozen Foods like Pizza, the frozen meals, etc. We used to eat those a lot (our schedules were crazy). We cut them out and DHs cholesterol is staying the same..Good.
He is also on Crestor which helps. Like you said, avoid fatty foods and read labels. Soups are also salty.

Re: DH has high cholesterol.....how do we change our diets?
Stay away from animal products, ie, beef, eggs, dairy
Foods that lower cholesterol:
Oatmeal High Fiber foods Switch to Whole Grains Fruit and Veg (at least 5 servings a day) Almonds, Walnuts Beans Fish
Its not necessarily the fat content, Olive oil and avocados, salmon... are high in fat but its the fat (monounsaturated) that improves cholesterol.

Also, be mindful of your intake of shrimp. It has more cholesterol than Heavy cream, lamb and pork ribs.

I thought that shrimp and most shellfish were good for you - it has the good cholesterol in it.

Same thing here, it's a definite challenge. I find he'll eat anything I leave out - I've taken to mixing tupperware containers with almonds, walnuts and raisins and he loves that. No read meat in this house. Lots of salad with every dinner, Kashi for breakfast, and no more real starchy or high carb foods. Eat whole grains like oatmeal (not instant!) and brown rice & barley, etc. - make your body work to break down what you out into it. And drink water, water, water! DH had a terrible time with any cholesterol-lowering drugs, as well with Niacin therapy; we have to do it through diet and exercise.

Sorry - forgot to mention he now takes Fish Oil and Flax Seed supplements and I sneak ground flax seed into anything I can. Good luck!

Re: DH has high cholesterol.....how do we change our diets?
More whole grains - replace all your carbs with the whole wheat version, including pasta, hamburger/hotdog rolls, bread, etc.
Eat more veggies.
Eat more fish.
Dh was diagnosed with high cholesterol as well - runs in the family - his Dad passed away from heart disease at 50 years old so he's VERY careful about what he eats. He cut out dairy and meat out of his diet - eats a lot of fish, veggies and whole grains. Hardly ever eats processed food.
Even with all that, his cholesterol is still high - he takes a fish oil pill everyday to help lower it.
