Help - students with disabilities professional/permanent cert. question!!!
I only have an intial certification (students with disabilities 1-6)
I work for a center that contracts with school districts, so I have been working in schools full time, teaching (satuifying the 3 yrs teaching requirement) BUT, I wasnt employed directly by them... I was employed by the center, who contracted with school districts...
I can provide to the state that I worked full time in these districts...
Will I have a problem obtaining my professional certification? I am very upset and worried about this... what if I lose my certification?????
Please help with any info, advice, etc....

I dont have an answer, but I would contact the Teaching Certification office at your local BOCES. Nassau has one. I am not sure about Suffolk. If you get no answers, you can pass yourself off as me. I have been permanent for a long time.

I agree. Contact Western Suffolk Boces in Dix Hills and they should have the answer for you.

They dont - I called today... I have to apply, but I emailed office of professions... I am very anxious for the answer, but was hoping someone could make me feel better

Do the certification requirements say you have to teach in a public school for 3 years or just teach? If it is teach then you should be ok. But I would definitely contact the certification office in Albany then.
ETA: I am under the old special ed certification so I am not too sure about the new certification requirements.

i would say you'll be fine. people that teach in private schools can use that time for their certification...it doesn't always have to be in a public setting. i don't see why you couldn't do the same with an agency. as long as you have documentation, i would think you'll be fine. try the nysed.gov site and click on certification... they have FAQ's posted there

I think shes right. None of my teaching experience was in the public sector - all non public. Perhaps you have to prove that you were supervised? Just a thought.

Thanks ladies - you make me feel a lot better - it actually just says classroom teaching experience.... Technically I really didnt act as a classroom teacher, but all of my experience has been in school classrooms... I'll see how we can make this work....

I think you'll be fine. Exspecially with our teaching degree.. I have the same...it does not always mean you have to be a "classroom teacher" so the state must have exceptions.
