Our friends' daughter had her adenoids removed. I don't recall the recovery time but she did say it helped her tremendously with sleeping.Chat Icon

Re: Anyone's DC Had Their Tonsils and Adenoids Removed?

Hi. My son had his tonsils/adenoids removed when he was 5 (he's 9 now). I don't know where you live, or if you have a pediatric ENT that you love, but if you want a second opinion, I HIGHLY recommend you see Dr. Max April in Woodbury. He is the BEST!! He's actually reknowned for pioneering a procedure known as PITA, which stands for Primary Intracapsular Tonsilotomy/Adenoidectomy. Basically, it is a shaving down procedure, in which the tonsils are shaved down rather than completely removed. This cuts down on pain and recovery dramatically. My son ate eggs and toast at the diner on the way home from the hospital following the procedure, and went back to school the following Monday (the procedure took place on Friday). I can't say enough about Dr. April. He is on Froelich Farm Blvd in Woodbury, and he's awesome!!

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the replies!

I love Dr. April! He did his tongue tie procedure years ago. However, he doesn't participate in our insurance plan :( Dr. O'Donnell in Patchogue is going to do it. Anyone hear of him?

My friends's daughter had them both removed last spring and she got her ears pierced at the mall on her way home. She was four.

I'm actually happy about it (and nervous at the same time) because hopefully it will help his swallowing and his excessive drool.

I just found out A girl at work has a DC who had the procedure over the Summer and she had complications right after which resulted in excessive bleeding and she had to get her stomach pumped Chat Icon

Re: Anyone's DC Had Their Tonsils and Adenoids Removed?

Hey Summer,

My Nikolas had his tonsils and adnoids removed when he was 5 years old. He also had tubes put in his ears at the same time (2nd round of tubes) 1 week before he started kindergarten.

Dr. Sugrue in Patch removed them and it was the best thing I could have done. He sleeps so much better at night. He doesn't snore and his breath is not horrible anymore when he wakes up. He was constantly sick. It used to be every other week at the doctors. If I remember correctly the doctor said his adnoids and tonsils were so big that they were blocking 80% of his passageways. He has since gained a little weight too which we wanted. They said since he had a hard time breathing it was difficult to eat for him.

I'll be honest the surgery was rough. He came out and was so angry with us. I know your little boy is a little older so you can reason a little more. He went in really knowing nothing. He screamed and coughed and was in alot of pain in the recovery room. We went home a few hours after surgury. He was in alot of pain the whole first day. He refused to take any pain meds for the whole week. They told me not to give him anything with red in it because you can't tell if it is blood or not.

He is a picky eater to begin with so his diet consisted of scrambled eggs. Very moist white rice and then I would put a little soup broth in it just enough to wet it. Jello. They tell you not to give them icecream at all. In about 4 days he seemed to be coming around but he was on the couch for the 1st few days.

I was so scared that he would start to hemmorage also because then they have to cortirize but he was fine and everything turned out for the best. I think it's the adnoids that are the most painful. He was screaming about his nose.
Oh and for awhile he sounded like a little mouse. His voice changed but then it adjusted after a few weeks. If I can remember anything else I will let you know. In the mean time if you have any ??? FM me.

Thanks Jamie Chat Icon

Nicholas practically has a breakdown when he is getting a haircut and forget about the dentist. He doesn't like people going anywhere near his mouth, so this should NOT be fun at all!

Re: Anyone's DC Had Their Tonsils and Adenoids Removed?

My friends DS just had them removed last Tuesday. He had no problems at all afterwards other than his voice being a bit raspy. She used a Dr. in Lake Success.

I'm not sure yet, someone is supposed to call me from the office tomorrow and go over it all. My ex took him to the appt this morning, so I wasn't there. The doctor is affiliated with Brookhaven though, so I assume it will be there, which I don't think I'm totally thrilled about. I'd prefer SB or St. Charles. Where did your son have his done? I actually might get a 2nd opinion at another doctor my friend told me about that is affiliated with St. Charles.
