Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
That there used to be a Foodtown and TSS in Oceanside. And they were connected, meaning you could walk from one store into the other from the inside. The TSS became Caldor's and now Kohl's.
I remember the Sands Shopping Center (also in Oceanside) before it was anything and was part of the dump.
The Alexander's near Green Acres. I believe its now a Target.
Loved Nunley's. Pep Boys doesn't do it for me.
Swenson's for ice-cream in RVC.
I also remember Gertz, Gimbels, A&S, Sterns, before they all morphed into another department store.

what do you remember from your childhood that is gone?
I remember when Modells was more like a Woolworths. I got my guinea pig there.
I remember when the Target in Commack was a flea market and a skating rink AND had a drive in movie theatre.
I remember the McCrory's fire.
I remember when the TJMaxx in Kings Park was a Ben Franklin. I bought so much embroidery thread there for my friendship bracelets.
Haha we had the same childhood!
me too. my weekends in middle school were either at the flea market or the Sears Mall! I used to love Modell's. That store was awesome. I can remember when Commack had a lot of empty space. Now every square inch is covered in stores. Its kind of sad, actually.
OMG! I forgot all about hanging out at the Sears mall!

The one in Levittown had the same thing! I wonder if there was some kind of deal with that.
I don't know if I'm remembering it wrong, but I think their was wood shavings on the floor of the supermarket.

not a place but an object...remember the best friend charms that you would split the charm in half and each would wear one side. Then when you decided to get in a fight you got it back and gave it to someone else...haha
You mean Miz-Pah? I had one of those.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
For those of you who know the South Shore Mall, I remember Captree Corner. And the little food court that was in there with cute little shops. And the Woolworth's that led straight into Burger King!! And how the floor was covered in carpet, and I still remember the spot where the mall used to end before they added the Sears wing.
Also, the Bayshore roller rink. Still standing but gone forever.
And for anyone who knows the hood, BrentCity!!!

I remember the old Roosevelt Field. It had Le Petite Mall that had a store that had Hello Kitty stuff. And it had "the cave" hair salon, and some restaurant I can't remember the name of. They also had an awesome cookie place. Woolworths. Alexanders. And it was so dark.
I remember TSS. But it may have been in Hempstead (?). I know we didn't go all the way to Melville.
I totally remember the Le Petite Mall! We used to get stickers and Hello Kitty stuff from that store!

ETA: Speaking of A and S, was there a restaurant upstairs? I swear I remember eating there when I was younger, but nobody else remembers....
Yes, there was a restaurant on the 2nd floor of A&S, which is now the Macys. It was by the restrooms. My mom used to take me there when we were shopping since there was never a food court at walt whitman...although sometimes we went to the Beefsteak Charlies that is now occupied by Legal Seafood

The KMart in Levittown used to be a TSS and that's where I worked when I was 16. I had to get a leisure pass from Eisenhower park in order to have photo ID to get hired.
I remember when the corner of Wantagh Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike was an empty lot called the Cornfields. Even though there was no corn.
We would walk from the high school through the trails there for lunch at McDonalds. We got all excited when this new store called Blockbuster Video moved in next door.
I still use my first Blockbuster video card that I got there when I was 18 and had no credit card. Until a month ago, they had no credit card on file for me, my old name, and the address of the house I grew up in that I haven't lived at it in 12 years.
eta:
McDonald's and Blockbuster are still there, I was just reminiscing. Us old people do that from time to time.
It's so funny I have the same memories

I remember that all. My first thought was McCrory's but thought no one would know what I was talking about.
To really date myself, I remember Link's Log Cabin & when that burned down.

How about when Ground Round served peanuts (or was it popcorn... or both?) and the floor was a mess, and they had cartoons playing up on a screen. They introduced me to Betty Boop.

Re: So, the WWM thread got me thinking...
I spent my entire childhood at the Roosevelt Raceway Flea Market. Every weekend, my parents were vendors there. It was a fantastic place to grow up. Everytime I come home now and go to that area I remember it like it was yesterday.
However, the race horses near the big incinerator was a big no no. I feel for the people who are buying homes there now.

I used to love to go to Swensons in Jr. high and HS after the movies.
And I remember all those department stores- plus Alexanders. My grandmother LOVED Alexanders. She would drag us there all the time.
