What was your best observation lesson?

Or just any lesson that when you finished, you felt really great about? I am being observed this year and am starting to think about what kind of lesson I want to do. It's a toss up between some kind of writing workshop lesson, math or social studies (character ed really).

Re: What was your best observation lesson?

Last year I was teaching 10th grade English and I did a lesson while my class was reading a book about prejudice in South Africa called Waiting for the Rain. It encorporated a movie clip, popular song lyrics, and a current events news story. All three were blended together seamlessly. It worked beautifully! I was able to get them to make connections from our text to the movie and then the article. The last line of the article was a line from the song. It was a lot of work and a lot of luck, but it worked so well. I was observed during the lesson and my Department Chair was so impressed. Just not impressed enough to make me anything more than a leave.

I do a lesson called "Fall Out Shelter" as an introduction to prejudice (for Holocaust literature). The kids are given a senario of nuclear war and they have to choose 10 people from a list (with varying descriptions) to save in a fall out shelter. It's amazing how none of the kids realize that they are showing prejudice when making their decisions. It's a big wake up call for them.

Re: What was your best observation lesson?

all of my observation lessons were just regular daily lessons. they don't want us to go above and beyond when being observed--they want to see normal, daily instruction.

i always did really well on them because they were simple. people who went all out usually didn't do as well because they get nervous about forgetting things that aren't commonplace for them
