Kindergarten registration already?
Hi, Newbie here.
A neighbor just told me that our local PS is having kindergarten registration next week. Is it normal to be so early in the year? I know Catholic Schools usually have open houses the end of the month, and I thought PS would have registration after that.
Since I'm undecided about public vs private (either catholic or continue w K program at current preschool) do I still go ahead and register at the PS? I don't want to miss the deadline.
And how do you decided on the PS anyway? Private schools offer tours and open houses, but since the public schools don't do that you have nothing to compare it too. Does anyone ever arrange an appt/tour with the principal? How do you get good info on policies regarding discipline, behavior expectations, homework, etc.
Thanks! T

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
as far as deciding, do you mean deciding which school ? for the most part, you have to go to the school you are zoned for, your district. (and I say "for the most part" because Ive heard of people working around it, which theyre not supposed to, but it happens). but you go to the school that you are assigned.
as far as policies, and info. you will get packets in the mail, and you will be invited to all sorts of meetings, orientations, and be able to meet with the principal, teachers, etc.
hope that helps

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
Hi Anna,
I haven't yet decided whether I want to send dc to public, catholic or other private school, such as their current preschool's kindergarten program. If we decide public, as you suggest, there is not really a choice as to which public - their is no choice within our district.
I had planned to attend the catholic school open house at month end, as well as getting more info on the K program at preschool.
When do the packets of info come about the public schools - before you choose to enroll or after you enroll?
I guess my concern is that without these packets or open house or other access to the public school, that I nothing to compare the catholic school to.
Thanks, T

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
Can you call the district or go down there on registration day and ask them? I don't have any school aged kids yet so I don't know the answer. I, myself, would probably go there on registration day to ask in person just in case I get the wrong info on the phone.

If you are curious about your local public school and would like to know more/hear more, etc....one way to do that is to go to the PTA meetings each month. You'll get a sense of the programs they run to help the school in so many ways - creating a sense of community for the kids, fundraising and just plain fun stuff.
You'll also meet lots of other parents and occasionally, the principal, teachers and other people who are part of your child's educational experience in that building.

I'm pretty sure there are no real deadlines. They can't/won't refuse your kid at a pubic school!

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
The start of registration in Sachem SD is March. I just got papers to fill out and send in and then I have to go and register in March and then the Kindergarten screening is in May.

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
Totally normal for Kindergarten registration to be in January or February..it tends to vary by school district..public school has no deadline..you could technically register them days before the start of school. Private Schools and Catholic schools may have deadlines but that would vary..they also might have limited enrollment opportunities. I would call some of the schools you are considering and see what their policy is.
Welcome.

Glad to hear it's not just me feeling this way! Funny how stressful this can be. I'm doing a great job of living up to the stereotype of the first-time neurotic mom.

Brilliant idea! I never would have thought of that.

Re: Kindergarten registration already?
DS is only 9 months, BUT when do you register for Kindergarten? Is it the January AFTER the child turns 5? DS will be 5 in April 2012. Would he be registered in January 2013 - starting in September 2013 or before in January 2012, starting in September 2012? Sorry... I'm a planner!!

In Sachem you have to be 5 by December to be in Kindergarten. My son will be 4 when he starts as his birthday is in October. Your son will start Kindergarten in September 2012 so registration would be in Jan/Feb 2012
