Reporting a Teacher

Hi All,
I thought I would throw this to you guys since you are teachers. I wanted your opinions on how teachers feel about the co-workers being reported and if you feel sometimes a teacher deserves it. My son is in 4th gr. He goes to reading 3x a week. He does need it, without question. I've always heard things about the teacher, but it never had any bearing on my child so I didn't pay attention. She is a very nasty teacher. She yells when they don't get things right or if they can't focus. Now I understand sometimes kids act up and I am definately not one of those "Not My Child" moms, but my son has knots in his stomach. They are there because the don't get it. I kept telling my son to suck it up and be on his best behavior. He told me he doesnt really talk, its if they aren't getting something. (At the conference she told me my son was quiet and very respectful) My daughter heard us and told us that in the lunch room all she does is yell. I feel like pulling him out of reading. I feel like he is getting a raw deal here. He desperately needs reading. I called the principal to discuss it. Right or wrong thing that i did.

TIA
stephanie

Re: Reporting a Teacher

I would request a different reading teacher if he really needs the extra help. Explain to the principal in a calm assertive way that you don't think the personalities of your son and this teacher match well and your son isn't very happy. Express that you understand he needs the help and you would like to request a different reading teacher that will meet his needs better. I am sure there are others in the school and she could probably switch a group with another teacher.

Re: Reporting a Teacher

Thats just it, there is one teacher for the lower grades and one for the older. Im waiting for the principal to get back to me. Its so frustrating.

Re: Reporting a Teacher

you are the parent and while there is always two sides to every story, you are your child's best advocate. I think (and this is probably what the principal will tell you too) that you should have talked to the teacher first. However, if you feel that something is not right, you have the right to say it (as long as you don't abuse that privilige, which many parents do).

Re: Reporting a Teacher

you should have spoken to the teacher first before going to the principal. any good principal would never speak with a parent before she spoke to her staff member first, and if the teacher has no idea that you're upset, that doesn't look good. a parent should always express her concerns to the teacher first and then if nothing changes of course go to the principal.

we have this happen a lot at my school and my principal would never speak with the parent without talking to the teacher first. it's just courtesy and she needs to know both sides of the story.

i agree that you are your child's advocate and your poor son shouldn't be upset to go to reading class. but you really need to let this teacher know your concerns about her class--not a he said/she said thing, but that he feels uncomfortable.

i wish you all the best of luck

I agree... you should always go to the teacher first- i have had a parent go directly over my head before and if they would have came to me the situation would have resolved itself much better...

I agree, but I understand your concern as a parent. Going to the principal first may elevate the situation and cause the teacher (if she's as rude as you say she is) to take it out on your child. It's sad to even say something like this, but things do happen. I would call the school asap and request to speak with the teacher. Maybe you could chat with her before the principal gets to her.

Either way, you went with your gut. If you, as the parent, felt it was the right thing to do by going to the principal first, then stand by your decision. Don't be wishy-washy and be sure to stand your ground. Be ready for a struggle if you want what's best for your child.

Good luck!!!
