if boston had really pushed for him, the yankees would have pulled out all the stops

Re: Mets get Johan Santana!!!

We need him... but unfortuntely, its just a one year deal, so who knows how much we'll have to shell out in '09 if we want to keep him. the bullpen needs help, so hopefully he'll be great!

they are going to offer him a long contract.. thats what the plans were all along... they would no way trade for him just to get 1 yr out of him

From USA Today -
The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

Thanks.... clearly i have old information!

who did the yankees offer?

the Yankees offered hughes, Melky and one or two prospects. The Twins were only doing it if the Yankees gave up Kennedy as well as the others. The Yankees said No Way, which I am thrilled with.

I think the Mets really needed him but I do think they gave up a lot for him and now your payroll is going to skyrocket. But I don't think the Mets could show up at spring training with basically the same team that fell apart at the end of last year. So I think they did what the really had to do.

As far as playing for championships now, as a Yankee fan I have to say that does not always work. The Yankees spent about 10 years trading away their farm system and they paid the price for it time and time again. It's not always the best thing to do.

oh i know that for sure

you have to understand the Met fans

we don't have much to stand on so signings like this are a big deal Chat Icon

but i don't buy the bag until I see him pitch

there's a long list of guys who were going to come in and "save us"

Glavine, Vaughn, Delgado, Wagner, Burnitz, Beltran, Bonilla - the list goes on and on - all resulting in failure

And I agree - with a new stadium looming, they needed this. If not, you have the same old team, and in that case, no one is going to shell out cash in the new stadium.

He's definitely not the total solution, but if he pitches the way he's supposed to, we have a decent rotation.

The bullpen still needs work

And in looking at the prospects they gave up - not crazy about losing Humber or Gomez, but we kept out #1 prospect, so that's pretty good.

Not always the best solution but...
With the team they have in place right now, with the addition of Santana, they are ripe for a championship. I think given all the circumstances surrounding why they NEEDED to get him they made the right move. With the collapse at the end of the season I think he will bring a much needed lift to this team come spring training. Lets hope we're in for a much better outcome this season.

Oh I agree with you and Don 100%. The Mets needed Santana more than just about any other team out there. They had to do this. They have a team that's capable of winning a championship if they can get their pitching together. Now you just did that. I still think the Mets need more than Santana though. But he's a good start. I don't think they will win this year but they can build a much stronger team around him now. And give him a year or so and he'll help your younger pitching staff also. It's a great move for the Mets. I just feel that giving up the farm is not always the best thing to do. Sometimes that comes back to bite you in the butt.

yep, i agree with you - he's not the total fix at all....and I heard on the news this morning all the met fans gloating about being better than the Yankees and winning championships

first - let's sign the guy

second - play the games

anything looks good on paper

I hate this "putting the cart before the horse" stuff

bottom line is - they were losing fans after last year. If they showed up on opening day with the same team, attendance would be down, and they want the new stadium to make money.
