Anyone take Provera?

My doctor recently prescribed Provera to me since I have missed almost three periods. My cycles have been pretty irregular since I've been off the pill. I went off of it in April. Recently, however, I haven't had my period in three months so the doctor suggested I take Provera. I have never heard of it before and was wondering if anyone else had taken it?

Provera is a synthetic progestin. What it will do is trick the body into thinking it was secreting progesterone during the 2ww. You take the provera, and then,...when you are done with the dose, your uterine lining will start to shed and you will get AF. Provera, will help you start a fresh cycle, however, you should get thorough testing done to see if they can detect why you weren't ovulating.

I would ask for the IGTT test, insulin glucose tolerance test, TSH,T3,T4, (thyroid hormones), prolactin etc. Fsh (on day 3 of your AF) and LH. Those are hormones that can cause you not to ovulate.

I have taken Provera in the past and completely agree with what RedStar said......I know what my ovulation problem is. It is important to know why you don't ovulate (provera doesn't make you ovulate) but provera is good to take when you miss a few cycles in a row. FM me if you have ??'s

Yes, I've taken it, in generic form it is medroxyprogesterone I think. I wasn't getting my period either after coming off the pill after being on it for 8 years,. Doc ran some blood work and everything came back fine. I just wasn't ovulating. The Provera induced AF, and then when I didn't get AF again for another 3 months, I took it again. Then I didn't get AF for another 2 months, so I went in to see my doc for another Rx and more bloodwork and it turns out I got pregnant! So it took awhile, but it eventually jump started my system and I ovulated on my own eventually.

If you ovulate, and don't conceive, you will always get AF, unless you have a corpus luteum cyst. What makes AF come, is the shedding of the uterine lining. The lining is signaled to shed when the corpus luteum starts to degenerate and stop producing progesterone.

Not sure if this makes sense, but basically, if you ovulate and fertilization doesn't occur, you will always get AF unless the leftover corpus luteum turns into a cyst and the body keeps secreting progesterone.

Some people, ovulate very very late. Like cd54 and conceive. In other words, they have an anovulatory cycle followed by an ovulatory one.

Once again, temping will indicate exactly what's going on with your body, if you aren't being monitored by a RE through bloodwork/sono.

Thanks for your information. I did have a blood work up for my thyroid, pituitary, prolactin. I did not have a glucose tolerance test. What would that be checking for? Diabetes? I believe I did check for diabetes in my last exam a couple of months ago.

The doctor really has no clue what is wrong with me, which why I believe she suggested I take provera as a diagnostic.

My periods have always been irregular. I do ovulate because I did the temperature testing a while back with a hormone doctor I was seeing. I was told back then that I produce too much cortisol which is what causes me not to ovulate.
Anyway, a lot of info. What is an RE? I know everyone talks about that a lot on this site? And can you recommend one in Nassau county?

Producing too much cortisol can actually cause you to be insulin resistant, and not ovulate. Getting your insulin and glucose checked is essential when you aren't always ovulating. Most people who are insulin resistant, are nowhere near diabetic. You would be suprised at how many people have normal glucose levels but are insulin resistant.

A reproductive endocrinologist, is a RE. If you have been ttc for awhile, that is the type of doctor you should see. As far as recommendations on LI, the girls on the infertility board may have some. I am actually switching RE's and heading into the city for mine.

I'am in the same boat as you and I am going to my doctor next month to get on provera or something I have always been irregular and came off the pill 8 months ago and haven't gotten in more than 5 months!!!
