Hello all! Hope you can help! A few questions about getting into teaching!
I think I made a decision. I want to be a teacher. I want to go back to school. Where do I begin? I have an Associate Degree.
What are the options for certification?
I know Elementary Ed and Secondary Ed are two options.

Your choices are varied.
Possible areas of certification are:
-Elementary Education
-Secondary ed. (you pick subject area such as Science or Math)
-Special Education (very broad...ranges from kids with learning disabilities to retarded children to emotionally disturbed children). then you choose between elementary or secondary level.
-ESL/TESOL: English as a Second Language
-Speech/Language Pathology
-Music Education
-Art Education
-also physical therapists and occupational therpaists can work in schools
You need a bachelor's degree in any area, but at this point, it would make sense to get one in Education or in the subject area if you want secondary. you may also need to complete pre-requisties if they were not met within your associate's degree. Within 5 years of your inital certification, NYS requires that you get a Mastesr degree. People usually use tis time to get certified if they have a bachelor's in an unrelated area or to earn another certification.
after your coursework, you take teaching certification exams, nothing to worry about. you dont' need them to pass your courses or grduate from the school but you do need them to get the NY state certificate. your coursework will also involve work in a school... you'll start observing and then by the end of your pgram, you will be student teaching.

Hofstra (probably the best on LI, IMO)

SUNY Stoneybrook (I think???)

Columbia University: Teacher's College
NYU
Pace

CUNY Lehman (Bronx)
Brooklyn:

St. Francis, Brooklyn
St. Joseph's, Brooklyn

Great Info from Donegal...I would defiitly pick something with a major though, I went to the NYCBOE and she told me I was "a dime a dozen" I had elementary ed..who didn't back then.
I went for TESOL for my Master's and just got my notice of tenure today!

Honestly I would stay away from doing elementary ed. From my experience there are just not enough jobs for everyone.

ITA...but if you really want to do Elem ed do it with TESOL, special ed or literacy

you don't need to speak another language to teach ESL. ESL is more about HOW to teach these children.. how to break down our language, giving them basic skills in English. Also, not all ESL kids have NO english, many of them come from homes where English is not the primary language, but they can speak some of it.
Depending on the district your in, knowing another language might be helpful, but not necessary. In my school, for exmaple the ESL teachers are fluent in Italian and Spanish, but all our kids speak Mandarin, Farsi or Hindi. So clearly they don't know those languages, but are still able to deliver the service.
Does this make sense?
