how does this sound? (2nd gr opinion needed)

I start seeing 2nd grade for enrichment tomorrow and am introducing sound to them.... their teachers had them read the page in the textbook... then they're coming to my room for an experiment...

I am going to make them hum and feel their vocal cords and the vibration... show them how they can force themselves to stop humming by pinching their noses... explain that it's because air has nowhere to escape and vibration stops....

Then I'm going to show them how sound travels in a wave by doing a demo with a slinky...

Their lab activity will be "dancing rice".... I made little drums with saran wrap pulled tight over the top of the cups...they're going to put rice grains on the top and use a tuning fork to see what happens when they put the active tuning fork above the rice...

I feel like this could be a lot for 40 minutes since they're little and I don't know them. I see them next week for 40 minutes, too. What would you do differently? TIA! :)

I know that my second graders would love that lesson...I think it will be enough for the 40 minutes...I might add a technology piece to it (or you could add it for next time) like a webquest or a BrainPop video...

That does sound like fun and if they are being enriched, they should be able to handle it..you can always leave some as a cliffhanger, since you haven't seen them before and don't know how they operate...have fun!
