Re: timeouts
We use them with our 2 1/2 year old, he's starting to "get it". Sometimes he'll even put himself in timeout.
It doesn't work at all with our 4 1/2 year old, so we take something away (ie Leapster, TV, computer) and that straightens him right out.

Re: timeouts
If your son is starting to hit time outs may be a good option. I use a timer and my son gets one min per yr of life, so he is 4 and gets 4 min time-outs. It is important not to engage him in any arguing or talking during this time. Just place him in a chair and set the timer. I'm thinking that your's is so young you will have to hold him there but try to walk a few feet away. It is also important for him to understand why he is getting a timeout.
There is a good book...123 Magic. At least I heard it is good.

Re: timeouts
You've got to love them. IT will take time. When my son was hitting I frequently would just say no hitting and then stop all interaction with him. I would ignore him and then explain that noone wants to play with someone who hits. Whenever he dealt with his anger in a better way I would give him lots of praise. My son rarely hits now at age 4. This too shall pass. Good luck
