"What are your long term goals?"

I saw an ad for a position that said to send your resume and cover letter and give a description of what your long term goals are.

Would it be in bad form to write "I want to win the lottery and never have to work ever again?"

Seriously though, what the heck are you supposed to write? My true long term goals are to raise a family and be able to support them financially! But no employer wants to see that! So what BS can I conjure up?

my long term goals are to make as much money as I can and work as little as possible. Haha, yeah, they don't want to hear that either.

But seriously, here are some bullet points on things employers like to hear:

-to be continually challenged

-to continually learn and develop

-to grow along with the company (this way you're buying into the fact that you believe the company will also grow -if it is a small or mid-size company they eat that up)

So it you were to put that in a sentence form you can say that your long term goals include immersing yourself into a role that would continuallly utilize your skills and talents and offer a challenge so that you are constantly learning and growing professionally along with the company.

OK, so maybe I'm not a good writer but you get the point.

Just relate it to whatever the position and the specs are!
