Update: When a recruiter asks for salary requirements...

Update:
I gave him a salary range. He met me right where I wanted, so I'm happy.

Now, let's hope the client is happy with my resume and I get an interview!!

Do you give it to them?

A recruiter has asked me for my salary requirements. DH says "no", but I don't want to lose the opportunity for this job. I'm willing to come in a little under market for it because that would still be a huge bump for me and I think it would put me at an advantage over other candidates.

Should I give a number or a range?

Salary requirements are like home prices, you have to look at the market value of your job, and then look at the skill you bring to the table. If you can handle the job 100% then look up the rate on the web and if that number is something you can live with then use that number, if it is way above what you have made in the past, lie a little.

good luck

We won't even see a candidate until we know their range.

Otherwise we could love a candidate and find out we can't afford them.

It's usually safest to give a $10,000 range.

Like "I'm looking to make between 80 and 90 as I currently make xxxx."

Does that help?

This is what I have done, and I also let them know what kind of benefits I would or would not need. I also let them know that the salary requirements depend on the details of the job. Marketing is such a broad term that the jobs are not all defined in the same way.

Re: When a recruiter asks for salary requirements...

Please give it to them. When I ask a candidate for salary requirements it means that I'm interested in that person and want to make sure that I'm not wasting my time or theirs by interviewing them.

Give an honest answer. Give a number that you would like to make, and that you think is realistic. Make sure this number is above the minimum you would take, though, as there will probably be some negotiation down the road if it gets that far.
