fractions lesson?
im doing a demo lesson this week for 8-9 fourth graders. it has to be a fractions lesson. any good hands-on lesson ideas?

that's what is so hard!!! i have no idea! it's a demo lesson for a job so i dont know the kids, i dont know what they know...
all the principal told me is that they are sped students in 4th grade and i have to do 'something' with fractions. i looked up the standards and am assuming that comparing fractions or adding fractions would be a good idea and something they can handle.
(i teach first grade right now so it's hard for me to think about what 4th graders need to know)

Well, check the post March skills on NYSED for fourth grade.
Are they very below grade level students?
If so, they might be doing very simple concepts depending on where they are.
Id do something concrete, with manipulatives as much as possible, as fractions are kind of abstract for kids without examples.

i was in a 4/5 sped class today and i overheard the teacher reminding the students to bring in M&M's so they could do fraction math with them....i hope that helps a lil...its hands on and creative
(not sure what the lesson was tho)

I used to use the Hershey's Fraction Book, that is good for hands on.
