Re: Do you still "vacation" with kids...or are they just trips now?

We just got back from Virginia and it definitely did not feel like a vacation. DH, BIL and our tenat golfed everyday and I took care of DS- like that was a big change from home life. I'm hoping that when we go to Florida in June it will be more family time and relaxing. I really enjoyed Florida last year when we took DS (he was 10 months.)
we are going to do FL...that seems like the safest bet for a good time.
disney, seaworld, then beach.

we always try, I am totally not afraid to travel and do things with him, but its so hard for me to spend money vacationing to sit in a hotel room or sit by a pool.
Are you kidding?! That's my ideal vacation- even before we had DS. I just wish I was able to read a book.

i am thinking about doing Mystic CT or New Hampshire for a weekend getaway with DS and DH this summer. I know it wont be like it used with just DH and I but we wont leave DS behind.

Me too!!! Read a book on the beach/by the pool with a nice, tall, refreshing cocktail and I'm set!!
Janice, I know you guys are more into the activity kind of trip. You should try to find a suite type set up, then you & Leo can have your "couples' activities" in the other room while Josh sleeps. You'll have to find a place that has the stuff you guys like (hiking, exploring, etc.) I know it won't be the same type of vacation you're used to, but it will still be "away" doing fun stuff. I think it'll be worth it.

What about a family cruise or vacation. Half my childhood vacations were spent with babysitters and "kids clubs" I know you are with him a lot do you think he would freak if you left him for a bit each day and did something like that?

he wouldn't freak, I would though I can't see leaving him with strangers on a cruise ship...I watch too much 20/20.
I was leaving him at the Y, till yesterday when a story hit of an armed kidnapper in the parking lot at 10 AM.
there went that deal.

cocktail is the key word!!
I am going to look into a suite, that's a great idea!
ETA: just sent an email to the girl doing my hotel bookings about the suite...thanks!

That's a key point. DH and I usue our timeshare and either put DS in his won room, or at the very least he's in our room but we still have a living area to hang out and not disturb him.

what do you do with a 1 yr old on a cruise though? that's what we could not figure out...other then pay for them
ETA: I guess its just another change of life.
We found activities that worked for him. The ship actually had a morning play group for babies (1 for under 18 months, 1 for 18 months to 3 yrs). Aside from that, he just liked looking around at stuff. We found a nightclub that was empty during the day where he could spread out his stuff and crawl around.
He also really seemed to like the ports. We'd go for long walks and he'd take in the sights (sometimes through his eyelids!)
I guess he mostly did the same things he does at home - play and watch.

Re: Do you still "vacation" with kids...or are they just trips now?
We don't have anyone to leave Alex with so we have no choice but to vacation with her.
We take short, overnight trips, like to East Hampton, New Hope, D.C., etc.
And then about twice a year we take a longer "vacation" - we always go to all inclusive, family friendly resorts with on-site daycare. So far we've always ended up at Club Med, in Florida and in Punta Cana, which we ALL loved. We had "our" time to play while Alex was in daycare, doing treasure hunts, face painting, etc., and at night we had fun eating in a restaurant full of other families, and hanging out at night to watch the shows.
It's not like it used to be, but still fun in its own right
