My encounter with a bear!
Crazy story I just wanted to share..
We went to bear mountain this weekened for a mini getaway. Yesterday, we took our dd to the zoo there. As we were walking in a man told us that our dollar was going to be worth it because a bear was loose (not one from the zoo) and had climbed a tree. As we walked in, we saw the bear in the tree..it was BEAUTIFUL! I was scared but they said it would stay there and no reason to worry. So we started going through the zoo.
We get halfway through and one of the park rangers rides through in one of those golf cart thingies telling us to keep moving because the bear came down and switched trees!! Now I am freaking out but we cant go back to the exit cause thats where it is. So we go on. About 15 minutes later, they tell us to exit quickly because this bear is moving more than they though he would and they are evacuating the zoo. We start running out of there! People were scattering everywhere. As we are walking out, we hear on one of the rangers walkie talkies that there are 2 people at the other end of the zoo and they are being held there because its too dangerous to get out at this point.
So we get out, thank god...and watch from the outside of the park. The bear climbed down and literally walked on the path that we were just one. They made us move again and we dont know what happened. They said in situations like these, they tranquilize them and move them to another place.
It was scary overall but a really cool thing to witness. I guess its called Bear mountain for a reason huh??

"Why is it called Bear Mountain?"...That's what I kept telling DH that I was afraid of when we were camping around Bear Mountain. DH said black bears would run away more than hurt you. I wasn't that sure.

Re: My encounter with a bear!
Noreen you have me laughing because there are bears here all the time! Nothing new, they are pretty skittish
The reason it was named Bear Mtn is because it resembles the profile of a bear lying down.

Re: My encounter with a bear!
Glad you are okay! That must have been a little scary!
Growing up, we had a summer house in PA. Once when I was about 8 years old, I looked out the sliding glass doors into the back yard and there was a HUGE bear hanging out in our back yard!
My brothers had been out on their mopeds came running in to tell us that the police told them to go straight home because there were reports of a bear in the area. Then they looked out the window!
Apparently, it was just a bear cub - He was tranquilized and later relocated. He was enormous, but I guess he was still young. I can't imagine how big he'd have been full grown. I still vividly remember seeing him from so close up.
Luckily, no one was hurt!

Me too (Donna and I live like 5 minutes from each other and about 15 minutes from Bear Mountain). MY Bro & SIL lives in Northern NJ (20 minutes from me) and they had a bear in there Townhouse complex a few weeks ago.

Re: My encounter with a bear!
I live near Donna & Dina...so I'm familiar with the bears up here...although I haven't had a run-in with any.
My neighbor had bear footprints on his blacktop driveway a 2 weeks ago - it seems that a bear was visiting the garbage cans a few nights in a row...I have since moved mine into the garage. What I thought was scary that they saw it as early as 8:30pm...the kids in my neighborhood are sometimes still outside playing at that time!
