Re: Stripping Membranes

This is what it is. It does NOT hurt AT all! you don't feel a thing actually!

Stripping the membranes is where a health care provider will separate your bag of water from the cervix, it is not intended to break your water, however, it may. It may also cause infection, and may be painful for some.

The reason that we tell people that we are stripping their membranes is to "get things going" in regards to labor. This little technique is usually done during a vaginal exam at the end of pregnancy, with or without the knowledge or consent of the woman.

Stripping the membranes, we are told, is supposed to stimulate production of prostiglandins in the cervix and bring on contractions. I have heard doctors tell my clients after stripping their membranes they will have the baby in two days. While this may appear to work for some, at term it's all a guessing game. There is no scientific work to date that can back up the routine procedure of stripping membranes.

You may want to ask your care provider to avoid this procedure if you are worried about the effects and risks. Or you may want to avoid vaginal exams during the end of pregnancy for the same reasons, because unfortunately the cannot accurately predict when we will give birth.

Re: Stripping Membranes

I had my membranes stripped with DS when I was 37.5 weeks because my ribs were dislocated (7 of them) and I wanted him OUT. So my dr stripped my membranes to get me to start dilating. It hurt, but not too bad. The dr said usually women are in a lot of pain getting it done and he was surprised that I took it so well.

The next day they broke my water because I was having contractions and dilating but my water hadn't broken. I had Vincent that night.

Re: Stripping Membranes

I had mine stripped twice with DS. I didn't feel a thing. I think it was the week I was due. He was born 2 days later.

My membranes got stripped at 38.5 weeks. I was 3.5-4 cm dialated and not having any contractions. They were stripped at 5:30 and contractions started at 10:00. He was born at 6:41pm the next day. After it was done, I bled a lot, like a period. She told me to expect that.

Thank you ladies.

I think I will ask my doctor to strip my membranes on Monday. I will be 37 weeks tomorrow. I am going to try a VBAC and my Doctor will not let me go over my due date.

I had it done with DS since I was one week late and he was already 9 lbs.

I don't know about others, but it hurt and I have a high tolerance for pain

That's a bit disturbing. That it would be done with or without consent or knowledge and there's no scientific data to support the necessity of it? Chat Icon

Re: Stripping Membranes

I had it done when I was overdue with Ella. There's not much to it really - just some manipulation "up there" by the doctor. It really only helps move things along if you're ready anyway.

Can't say it didn't hurt though...Chat Icon
