Felt defeated yesterday

i've been running on a treadmill at my gym for about 4 wks now. I can almost run 2 miles (i've never been a runner/sports person so this is an accomplishment for me!) so yesterday DH says he wants to go running w/ me and we'll just go around our neighborhood. I agree and we head off after work. Well, I expected to hold up so much better than I actually did! I felt tired, sore and winded almost immediately and was gasping for breath. I looked like i had never run a day in my life! I really thought i'd do terrific because i usually feel accomplished after hitting the treadmill. I became totally frustrated and defeated and in my anger vowed to never run w/ DH againChat Icon

Is it that much differnt running outside then on a treadmill?

Re: Felt defeated yesterday

It's absolutely different. You require using more muscles to propel yourself along the ground vs the instantaneous movement of the treadmill. In addition to that, asphalt is much less forgiving on our bodies than a cushioned treadmill deck.
What you could do to get in the groove of running outside is do intervals (walk 2 minutes, jog 2 minutes). It will get your body accustomed to that type of environment.

Don't be so hard on yourself! Running on the road is not the condition that your body has experienced.

I completely agree. Also keep in mind that on a treadmill your pace is clearly defined. Your DH might have started you both out too fast which resulted in the early onset of fatigue. This used to happen to me and then I learned to control my pace and start off slow and gradually increase my pace!!
