Is anyone a nurse?

I am looking into going back to school to become a pediatric nurse. Do you enjoy what you do? Are the hours flexible and is it worth it $$ wise??

Re: Is anyone a nurse?

I'm a nurse and love it. I am currently in psychiatric but may move to OB in a few years. The hours are very flexible. We have a baby on the way and I am able to work 4pm till midnight, which really helps because my dh is home from work by 3. So a parent will always be home. Not many careers offer such a flexible work schedule. I def., think the money is worth it. It's a hard job but you feel so good about yourself when all the hard work pays off and you helped somebody... the pay is nice too :)

It's totally worth it! I've been a nurse for over 10 years now and I always say it's a great job for a mom! I work 3 -13 hour shifts in two weeks.. It can be aggravating, especially this day & age with the state of healthcare, but it's completely worth it all! GL

Did you have to work a lot of holidays? I just had my daughter a couple of months ago and I hate the thought of missing holidays with her.

I think it depends on the unit that you're on, but for the most part, when you start you're low man on the totem pole, so you're first few years (at least) you don't really have any seniority to get those days off. But, most places pay time and a half, at least Chat Icon

It really is low man on the totem pole. If there is a high turnover rate in that unit then you really don't do many holidays.. Plus, if you are on nights it really works out, b/c you can atleast have off some of the holiday.
