Do you think of your job a career or a way to pay the bills?
I know most people on here like their job and enjoy what they do. But do you consider it a career? Is it just a small portion of your life or a major portion? Is it what you always thought you would do?
Having heard from my advisor that I'll be graduating sooner than expected  (still a ways away though) I am thinking about what I am going to do next. I just wanted to get a survey of how people feel about their job.

Definitely both....
I love what I do and it is what I always imagined i would do.
however, it is the means to pay bills, etc, and if i had to give it up if i won the lottery, i would be okay with it!

Definitely career. I think I was born into this--I am in the same field as my mother and father, and just finished my doctorate in the field to be eligible for higher positions. It is a huge part of my life, and since my mother and father both work in the field, we talk about work a great deal when we are together. I've considered becoming a SAHM when we have kids, but I think even if not working FT I would continue to teach graduate courses as I do now. I really enjoy what I do.

I currently love my career, but still, it's a necessary evil to provide for my family. My family comes first, and if I won/inherited enough money, I would leave in a heartbeat.

Sadly... My job is a way to pay my bills. I dont have the drive & passion to do what I do. I just come to work, do what I have to do & leave. Dont get me wrong, I work really hard, but finance is not in my blood, so I'm not passionate about it.
I would love to have a career I can be passionate over, however, I am where I am for a reason. This is the path that life has taken me to. I never know where this will lead me, but at least I can say I am content & comfortable. I work in a great company with some of the nicest people I have ever met.

Both. I love my job, BUT if I am able to be a SAHM when I have kids at least for a few years I would totally do it.

a little of both- i do like what i do
( speech therapist in a school), but i'm not totally passionate about it. like somebody else said, i come to work, do what i have to do, and go home... even though i like my job and i like working to have my own $$$, i'm just not a career driven person by nature. i don't think i would be overly passionate about any job/career i had.

See, I used to think I was driven. But now after being in grad school for song long and finally deciding I do NOT want to be a scientist, I can't imagine what I can do with my specific skills. I study hearing in birds. It's not hot like biochemistry, and yet I don't have the credentials to do anything with psychology since I don't have the clinical background/experience. I feel stuck, and so because I don't know what I could do, I am not so driven.

it's a career
but once I leave NY - I might be taking a different path
there is only 1 or 2 companies in South FL that do what I do here (my industry is NY based for sure)
but I will always be in marketing/product development/retail- just maybe not in home products for ever

a career for sure. you'd be mad to put the hours and stress I put in and projects I allow myself to be talked into if you didn't like it.
I made a couple of calls on my honeymoon, and was emailing people while in labor. I love what I do.

It's both. It's definitely a career and one that i've worked hard for and i love it, but it's still just a job. I have a really strong work ethic and am extremely ambitious, but despite that, to me a job is a job and its not how i define myself. It really is just a small portion of my life but i figure that if i have to go to work everyday, it should be for something meaningful and rewarding (financially, especially).

Its a career. It is soemthing that I have always wanted to do and I think that I am good at what I do. I went to 7 years of school...and I am so glad I did.
Even if I won the lottery I think I would still go to work--maybe not everyday but I would still go to work

It pays the bills. I have no attachment to my field or position. It's simply a means to pay my mortgage!
My DREAM job is to be a SAHM, so if I won the lottery, they would never see my azz again!

Definitely just bill. If I want to do what I really love, I'd have to go back to school, but I just can't afford that right now.

For me it's just a means of getting the money and benefits we need. I'm not passionate about it & if I won the lottery I'd be out of there so fast!

i really like my industry (public relations.) its not the career i thought about when i was younger, it's something i fell into in college but i'm so happy i did. i definately consider it a career, and not just a place i go to pay the bills.
