appropriate or not -- eating chips in a shared office

I'm OVERLY sensitive to the sound of people chewing, so this really is a serious question.

Do you think it's appropriate or not to eat chips and crunch away on them in an office you share with someone else?

I find it entirely disgusting and inconsiderate -- but as I stated, I'm overly sensitive to listening to people chew. It skeeves me out.

oh no! I just ate a bag of Sour Cream and Onion...
we are in a loft environment and there are only 10 of us...but the AC is cranking so I think my chewing was contained....

now my breath is another story.

It wouldn't bother me, but I'm pretty oblivious to those things.

Re: appropriate or not -- eating chips in a shared office

If it's a small bag of chips like a lunch size one, No, But if it's a family size bag and everyone is in there i would offer to everyone in the office, Otherwise Enjoy your bag of chips... It depends on my mood if the person is chewing loudly i find it annoying.

No, this is why I'm asking. I KNOW I'm overly sensitive to listening to people chew. It's my BIGGEST pet peeve. It totally skeeves me out... I wouldn't want to say anything, though, if it's not something others would find disturbing b/c my sensitivity isn't someone else's problem. Chat Icon

I think I would be ok with it unless it lasted for longer than 30 minutes.

It really depends on the day. Somedays things bother me more than others.. I dont think on an average day it would offend me.. Cracking gum would.. And I know my DH would flip if someone crunched potato chips.. So your definately not alone!!

Re: appropriate or not -- eating chips in a shared office

I believe in common courtesy but just as I believe it should be extended both ways.

sure it may be irksome to hear someone chewing, but at the same time, this poor person also holed up with me at work all day may be having her/her one dreamy indulgence that makes it all feel better, ya know.

I think everyone has sensitivities and HYPER sensitivities.

I tend to give people some slack when it's something I know I am UBER sensitive to. not everyone has the joys of being as much of a nutter as I am. Chat Icon

I am the same way - word for word.

It's disgusting, rude, and ANNOYING! And yes, I have to deal with this on a regular basis. I want to smash in her donkey teeth.

i have a problem with this, but i may be overly sensitive as well. it drives me nuts to hear the people sitting next to me eating "loud" food. the worst part is that the guy next to me eats with his mouth openChat Icon

it takes every last bit of my patience not to say anything.

see, for me table manners matter far more than what one is eating.

eat every chip known to man, but just don't let me see every stage of consumption! Chat Icon

really, I don't think it's my place to say Jenny can't have an egg sandwich just b/c I don't like the smell, or Sally can't have baby carrots b/c she chews to loudly.

cummunal office is just that...communal...not the world according to Ophelia (totally the world's loss, btw Chat Icon )

I don't think it's inappropriate, unless it goes on for excessive amounts of time, or the person is chewing with their mouth open or licking their fingers or something equally nasty.

I'm super sensitive to it too - it's gotta be the grossest thing. If it was a regular thing, I would def have to say something. Chat Icon

it depends on how loud it is. My boss eats chips all the time, and the smell actually annoys me more then the sound.

I don't think it is inappropriate at all unless the person is making a mess. If it really bothered me I would just get up for a bathroom break to recollect myself.

I would agree with this. I am very sensitive to odors so that would bother me more.

Re: appropriate or not -- eating chips in a shared office

I hate when people chew w/their mouths open period if I can hear or see them, office, home, whereever. I think chewing LOUDLY and smacking lips, licking fingers etc. is innappopriate, but regular quiet eating-of-chips in a shared office is OK.

It doesn't bother me but it's one of those things people have to deal with when you share office space. I'd try a earphones or maybe take a walk while your co-worker eats.

When you don't really have a choice about your proximity to others, I think you have to make some allowances. We have shared cubes & no designated lunch area, so food sounds & smells are part of the game.

The guy next to me is a loud chewer & he eats constantly, but he isn't doing anything out of line.

It's not unheard of to eat chips while you work. I don't think it's one of those unspoken rules, like microwaving fish.

Re: appropriate or not -- eating chips in a shared office

if you are hyper sensitive, i wouldnt say anything. But if they are eating with their mouth open or slowly rustling the bag (for some reason THAT drives me insane) i'd bring it up and just preface it that it may just be you and your supersonic hearing.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. As long as they weren't getting crumbs all over, eat away.

Can you use headphones?

Kara, I can relate - this is one of my pet peeves and it drives me insane. Dh happens to be the LOUDEST most insane chewer - I don't know how I ended up marrying him Chat Icon

Honestly though, it is your "thing" - most people wouldn't be bothered by it, so I don't think it's necessarily rude. If I were you, I'd put on my headphones, or take a bathroom break while the person is chewing ravenously Chat Icon
