separation anxiety

We have had Denver almost 3 weeks now, and he is still struggling with separation anxiety. He is never alone more than 3 hours but whenever he is home alone, he is confined to the kitchen, and we come home to puddles of pee and poop. If we leave him in the kitchen and go elsewhere in the house, he cries. The trainer said that he will overcome it but it hasn't gotten better! We even bought a CD and play it whenever we are not here.

Any suggestions?

Re: separation anxiety

I say go with a crate. He'll eventually move on to chewing things up when you are not home.

I agree! First of all, a crate gives him a secure, safe place to be when you aren't home. Secondly, he won't go to the bathroom in the crate because it's a small area (the kitchen gives him room to get away). Lastly, you will have problems with him chewing on furniture, cabinets, etc.
He will also learn to love his crate as he gets older and when he wants to go to a "safe" place, it will be his crate.
Good luck, he is a cutie!

We had started out by crate training Denver. When he was alone, he would go to the bathroom in the crate, it was a disaster. Even now, if he is in his crate and we are around, he is an angel, and the minute he is alone in the crate, he goes to the bathroom.

Re: separation anxiety

he's going in his crate because he knows you'll leave him out.

have you talked to the vet? are you cleaning the crate with Nature's Miracle? If he smells himself in the crate, he'll continue to go in it.

I also believe smaller dogs are harder to train...Boomer is over a year old and still will have pee pee accidents in his cage if he gets freaked out

We do clean with Nature's Miracle. It's funny, he rarely has accidents but when we are not home (which is only about 3 hours/day), he always does. Lots of adjustment for our little pup.

Thanks for the advice!
