How to get more energy

I live alone and do not have a second job.....can someone please tell me why the hell I am tired ALL the time??? Could it really be depression?

This morning I was pysched to start going back to the gym, even packed my clothes, and now all afternoon I've been looking for ways to get out of it, or thinking how I might be able to sneak a nap in before the gym. I hate myself for this!!!

How can I gain more energy???

If you figure this out, let me know. I am so bad. There is no reason for me to be so tired and lazy.

I know this might sound counterintuitive, but going to the gym will actually give you more energy

Re: How to get more energy

I tried going to the gym regulary (like 8 months ago Chat Icon) and I never felt more energy, all it took was one weak moment, and the gym hasn't seen my a** since.

Re: How to get more energy

Honestly, I think its habit, because I am the same way.

I work 8- 4:30, and come home and fall asleep for an hour.

But I started taking a class 2 nights a week from 5-10, and its anatomy so not particularly thrilling, but I can stay awake through that.

You just have to fight the habit of going home, paking on the couch and taking a nap or falling asleep.

Also, make sure you are actually getting enough sleep at night. Most people actually need closer to 9 hours of sleep than 8. And start establishing a good sleep routine- go to bed and get up at the same time everyday- even weekends (I still have a hard time with this). But it helps.

As for the gym, I think it is all about making it part of your routine. As you said, I always make sure to pack my bags and bring them with me to work and then I just force myself to go to the gym. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I run, so I make sure to set weekly mileage goals. If I miss too many days there is no way to reach the mileage and then I feel so guilty.

At this point, when I wind up taking an off day during the week, I really do not know what to do with myself for the time I would usually be at the gym. I wind up just surfing the internet and get nothing really accomplished, so I figure better to be productive.

Re: How to get more energy

Once you start working out, you will have more energy. I used to always be soooooo tired! Now I am so energized it's scary. Some things that I think help me:

Eat a good breakfast.

Eat well throughout the day...not junk, it weighs you down! Chat Icon

Vitamins

lots of water

A good night's sleep

One thing for me is not going home!!! If I go home, I don't want to leave, so it's easier to do things if I do them on the way home.

How is your diet? Do you eat a lot of sugary or processed foods? If so, it could be causing your lack of energy.

Re: How to get more energy

I agree with all of the suggestions everyone had about getting enough sleep, eating well & exercising. Also make sure you're getting enough sunlight, I know it sounds like a strange thing.. but when I'm indoors all day long I get sooo tired, but getting a little bit of sun instantly wakes me up. Hope you feel better soon!

Re: How to get more energy

I know with myself that I have more energy when going to the gym. When I stop is when I am totally lazy & fatigue.
That alone is reason for me to be motivated to go!!!

Re: How to get more energy

Two things, like everyone else said, it has to become your routine or habit. You have to commit to stick to it for 3 months. After 3 months it becomes part of your daily routine and you'll start craving your workouts.

Seconod, what you eat makes a huge difference on your energy levels throughout the day. Lots of protein, fiber, veggies and fruit will give you more energy. Snacks loaded with sugar and carbs will weigh you down. You'll have energy for 30 minutes but then you'll crash. So, before a workout, make sure your meal is packed with some energy, rather than sugar and carbs.

that sounds great!!!

but don't overwhelm yourself in the beginning. 5x a week is a lot. Maybe start with the 3 gym days, and like Beth said, after 3 months pump it up.

I know for me that I used to get overwhelmed and quit going. But then I started with 3 days then got comfy with that and increased from there.

good luck!Chat Icon
