Ugggh I hate when people just can't mind their own business and won't back off. That is awesom that Alex eats those things. My DS's menu is so limited it's not even funny.

He won't eat snacks either. He won't eat cake, cookies, ice cream...etc....He'll have some chips though...Chat Icon But if you put a plate of cookies and a plate of watermelon in front of him he'll go for the watermelon in a heartbeat.

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!

I think what you are doing is a really great gift for your daughter. You are teaching her to appreciates good, healthy, nutritious foods. She is learning that food should be wholesome and natural. Treats are just that--treats. Don't listen to all those people who are telling you any differently. When your daughter grows up to be a fit and healthy women who has a great palate you can thank yourself!

We plan to teach our DS about food and proper nutrition and how to appreciate all foods and make good choices. I plan to make one meal for the entire family just as I do now for DH and myself. No separate chicken nuggets or fish sticks for DS!

It happens no matter what. If you don't do things the way that someone else does them, you are going to be judged to some degree. It comes from one place: Insecurity. Judgement is a defense mechanism. Some people assume that your feeding Alex a very healthy and varied diet means that you are judging them for not doing the same. Even if you aren't.

And honestly - if you fed her the typical diet you would be judged for that by other people.

Do what you feel is right for your child and hang in there!Chat Icon

ITTTTA with this. I think that is awesome. I am not veg but this is how I plan to feed my children.

Awesome for you!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I alreadky know that when DS eats, it's gonna be stuff thatI eat, that's the way my parents raised me, and I eat everything!!! (sometimes that's my problem though)

My kids will not eat from the kids menu of crap, they will eat healthy adult options, just as I did.

i was the 5 year old ordering king crab legs and eating the entire plate while the people sitting next to us watched in awe.
Yes, it's a little different than what you are doing which is VERY healthy, and I hope to do the same, I just loathe chicken fingers, pizza and mac n cheese for my kids, why should those be his only options?
My son is the only kid in his class that drinks water....the ONLY ONE!!!!

I was amazed....

This is not to offend anyone on here who feeds their child chix fingers and pizza, but I just want my kids exposed to all different kinds of foods so they will grow up not saying "ew" to everything, another of my pet peeves.

Good job Beth!!!!!

My Dh and I have been talking alot about this and I have to say I agree. We are big restaurant people and want our kids to eat what we eat. Although I do think you can make substitutions for things like this. I have made my friends girls homemade mac n cheese with organic milk, cheese and whole wheat pasta.

Check out a book called Deceptively Delicious! It tells you all sorts of healthy substitutes that kids love! My mom told me about it.

I hear ya! I never kept snacks in my house like goldfish or cookies. If she wanted a snack, she had carrot sticks or fruits.

But since my mom started watching her she is all about cookies, pretzles and goldfish. Oh and g-d forbid we pass an ice cream truck- she SCREAMS for ice cream.

I think that is great that she will eat like unfortunately my son won't. So he is the one in the class eating the junk and the fish sticks, etc. He is also very smart for his age, etc.

You do what you think is right for your child. And that is all we can do.

I'm not judging anyone who feeds their child junk and fish sticks, nor am I saying that children who eat that aren't smart. What I'm saying is don't judge ME for NOT feeding those things to my child, and don't insinuate to me that my child will be any less healthy or intelligent because of her lifestyle.

Maybe its just bc its a society thing and not so much people saying "Bad Beth...what a bad parent". I would NEVER judge a parent or criticize a parent for what they do but I would be the first one at my dds bday party to say "Beth, heres a piece of cake for Alex". Not bc I am trying to overstep your boundaries but thats all I know from. Bday= Bday cake...KWIM. I think your way is great and works great for your child and family. In the end I think you are probably going to have to kinda teach those around you that this is what I do with Alex A, B, and C bc it is not unlikely that someone or alot of people are going to continue to make the mistake of offering her "bad" foods.

Oh no, I get what you are saying and I"m completely sensitive to that, and aware that most people wouldn't know. I'm not offended in the least bit when these occasions arise.

What caused me to vent is in the last week or so I've had 3 people literally CRITICIZE how I feed Alex. From family, to even her teacher.

It just gets annoying having ot defend myself over and over and over again.

And what REALLY riles me up is when family, friends and/or teachers are perfectly aware of what we are trying to do with Alex, continually undermine us by (1) criticizing us, and (2) continually offering these things to Alex.

Are they intentionally giving her lets say a cookie? or are they just saying "why are you giving her hummous vs a cookie : )" Honestly, I got all these questions with cosleeping and in the end its sooooo your choice...no one elses. Eventually you will just give up on answering everyone anyway and eventually they will get tired of questioning you.

I think it sounds like you have created great eating habits in your dd. I hope our dd eats that well. I too will try to limit the sweets but at only 7.5 mos, people are already annoyed that she is not having juice and cannot understand why I do not want her to try ice cream or whipped creamChat Icon

Re: I'm tired of the judgment!

DS gets both, I believe in everything in moderation. He loves fresh fruit, some veggies, hummus etc, but he also loves french fries, ice cream and cookies. I often make my own - like sweet potatoe fries w/baked Tilapia to keep it healthier, but he has had McDonalds Fries less then a handful of times in his 2 yrs of life.
