Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
Did anyone get this email? Does anyone know if this is true? Even as many City Council program priorities were cut in the final city budget, the Keep the Promises Coalition was successful in salvaging some 60 percent of Teacher’s Choice funds, which had been threatened with elimination. We wanted you to be among the first to know this year’s amounts. The Teacher’s Choice allocations are as follows:
$150 for all teachers; $100 for social workers, school psychologists and guidance counselors; $50 for school secretaries; and $75 for lab specialists. If you’ve already begun making purchases, you may use receipts that date back to Aug. 1, 2008. The purchasing period ends on March 15, 2009. Everyone eligible to participate in the Teacher’s Choice program will receive a separate allocation from the DOE in December to cover purchases made anywhere – as long as the purchases are for appropriate educational materials for use in a classroom or other professional assignment. Remember that unreimbursed spending on school supplies is also tax-deductible. Sincerely, LeRoy Barr UFT Staff Director United Federation of Teachers • A Union of Professionals

Re: Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
Are you kididng me? This would be awful and DISGUSTING! Don't they know we don't get ANY supplies and the $260 we were getting was not even close to enough!
I am so suprised and a lot of teachers may not know until Sept when they have already spent there money assuming they will get it back.
Just terrible!
Thanks for letting us know
Edited:
I just cheked the UFT site and it says nothing. Do you think you e-mail could be wrong???

Re: Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
I did not receive an email. Was it from your principal? or UFT? the website has not changed and being Aug. 1st, I do not think it is fair for them to make such a drastic cut now. What about those who already began buying.

Re: Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
First of all WHY the hell do secretaries need TEACHERS'S CHOICE? What are they buying? They get all of their supplies.
I am just going to buy less this year then

That is terrible- at my first school we had no chalk, and I started too late to be eligible for Teacher's Choice that year.
It sucks, but I am not surprised. One benefit of being in so long is that I don't need so much- but it's got to be much harder on the people who are early in their careers and/or getting new assignments.

Re: Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
that sucks!
why is that school secretaries get a THIRD of what the teachers get? no offense to them, of course, but that doesn't seem fair.

They just started this last year...IMO NO need for them to get $$$. If they took they money they were giving them and gave it back to the teachers we wouldn't have a problem. They are not buying things for kids!

Secretaries always got TC, at least since I have been a teacher(since 2000.) I think it is awful we've been cut so much.

Re: Teacher's Chioce has been reduced???
UPDATE WITH PROOF!!!
Teacher’s Choice allocations set for this year Aug 4, 2008 4:07 PM
Even as many City Council program priorities were cut in the final city budget, the Keep the Promises Coalition was successful in salvaging some 60 percent of Teacher’s Choice funds, which had been threatened with elimination.
The Teacher’s Choice program, now in its 22nd year, helps offset teachers’ out-of-pocket purchase of supplemental classroom supplies. It is built on the premise that educators are in the best position to decide what supplies they need for their classrooms and assignments.
The city funding for the coming school year was reduced from $20 million this school year to $13 million.
The Teacher’s Choice allocations this year are as follows: The Teacher’s Choice allocations are as follows:
$150 for all teachers; $100 for social workers, school psychologists and guidance counselors; $50 for school secretaries; and $75 for lab specialists. If you’ve already begun making purchases, you may use receipts that date back to Aug. 1, 2008. The purchasing period ends on March 15, 2009.

Remember that unreimbursed spending on school supplies is also tax-deductible.

Oh I overheard the secretaries thanking the UFT rep (like he had anything to do with it) for getting teachers choice last year that's why I thought that...did they always get that amount??
Still rediculous that they get a dime
