My moms checking account was drained AGAIN..twice in one year and we think we found the culprit...
My mom checked her bank account today only to see over $600 debited..she was so upset as she only had maybe $700 or so in there to begin with. The charges were online shopping charges..
My younger sister pointed out that both times this happened it occured 4 days after they ate at the diner....this particular diner does not block out the credit card #, it keeps them all on the receipt. They are pretty sure an employee used the #'s to shop but investigating right now.
Just be aware of any place that doesn't block all but the last 4 #'s. I feel really bad, it'll take at least 10 days again for her $$ to be refunded...

CRAZY- I hope she gets it all back soon!!!
I've used my CC at places to then sign the receipt and see my entire CC # printed out on it! I made sure to CROSS OUT all the numbers- I left the last 4 in case they needed it! So far I've been lucky but once I know thats how it'll print up i try to make sure I have cash when going there!
I HOPE they find the jerk thats doing this!

That diner is in big trouble! MC/Visa has strict regulations about truncating numbers and any machines that do not truncate should have been disabled, upgraded or re-programmed no later than October 2006.
A stationary store by me didn't truncate numbers the last time I was there. I scribbled over the first 12 digits of my card number and REALLY aggravated the chick behind the counter.. but seriously - why should she have any access to my credit card info?
On line shopping fraud is relatively easy to trace if the fraudster was stupid enough to ship to her house or her families house.
I hope they resolve the issue for your Mom SOON!

Very scary 
I have Bank of America and recently they mailed me new debit cards telling me that I "may" have been the victim of card theft. Whenever I buy anything online I use my 2nd checking account that I hardly use - I never use my primary account. Or I use my Amex. It's just too risky!

This is what I told people who told me that the internet was not safe for online purchases.
A young kid at a dinner/restaurant also get your CC info so it's not safer.
Also... just crossing numbers on the receipt is not enough. The person who took your CC actually has the # and expiration date. They have the CC in their hand.
At this point I would pursue the person who did it.

Wanna know what's scary? With most cards you don't need an expiry. ANY valid expiry date will work.
Crossing out the numbers is definitely a good start. I mean - the thief COULD down your card number and not use the receipt.. but then they could do that even if the machine truncates. Not many people are that motivated. But you are right - just knowing that a thief works there might be enough to make me stay away! What town is this diner in?

That sucks....What a jerk
But...She should be able to get her $$ back within 24 hours. Why is it taking so long? She shouldn't be punished for some arsehole.

how come it takes so long to get the money back? i'm surprised the bank takes so long to get the money back into the account. money was stolen out of my account and it was back in like 2 days.

oh that was what happened to ME.....i don't know what happened to the OP's mom's money.
my bank was going after the people who stole my debit card info--but i dont' know what happened to them.

On a side note...when we pay our bills by check we make sure to only write out the last 4 digits as well...the rest are xxxxxx
We got that tip a while back from some security thing we saw.
