Abnormal Pap
I'm rather confused about this? Unless I misheard the doctor when pap comes back abnormal it means its HPV (no necessarily cancerous form can be one that goes away on its own) but that its is HPV?
Is this right? Could it still be an error?
ETA: Also does HPV usually show up right away or its something that can show up later on even after a normal pap?
ETA:I didnt go for it today since still have period.
However I am starting to wonder if it came back abnormal because of everything my body has gone thorugh the last few months, between the polyps removed from my uterus, and the infections I had after the surgery.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I'm not sure if its necessarily HPV. Many times a woman can have HPV in her system for many years and not know it. Usually if her immune system is down, HPV may be picked up even though it wasnt in previous paps. Some women may have it and it just isnt even detected.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had abnormal paps and when i was tested for HPV i came back negative. I believe HPV can cause cancer but cancer is not always because of HPV.

They test for that as well. Did your doctor specifically tell you it was HPV? Just because you got an abnormal pap, does not mean it is 100% that. It could be several things (Hormone changes as well). Did your doctor tell you they want you to go back for another pap, another test or wait it out a couple of months?

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had an abnormal pap about 4 years ago and they retested me, and the second one was fine. I now have to get them twice a year, but they have all thankfully been fine ever since. I do not have HPV.

HI. Yes, I'm posting under a fake name because I'm too embarrased to ask what I'm using my real name, lol But I have to ask. Was this partner of yours a pornstar, lol, because as happy as I am with my DH (he's bit on the small), I could never imagine him being able to do this to me. Has you DH asked about your previous partners? Mine has and he sometimes feels he's inadequate, because I have told him I have had larger men. Sorry, I don't mean to steal the thread.
um what? Are your referring to my post or someone elses?

An abnormal pap does not necessarily mean HPV. There can be many other reasons for an abnormal pap...although Im not sure what tells the doc. it is HPV.

Re: Abnormal Pap
I had an abnormal pap once a few years ago, and it turned out to be the beg. stages of a yeast infection.
I did have to be retested after finishing the meds and I havent had an abnormal once since...
So basically- an abnormal pap does not mean HPV- I guess it could mean almost anything.

see this is what confuses the crap out of me. I think the doctor said it was HPV, which is what I dont get did I just misunderstand him?
I can understand my pp being abnormal right now. I recently had polyps in my uterus that were removed, I battled infections for weeks after it, I started a BC and my hormones were out of whack etc. I would think all these things would possbly give me an abnormal pap.

Re: Abnormal Pap
Just wanted to add that if you have sex within a couple days of a pap the sperm is still in there for a few days and can cause your pap to come back abnormal- so it's best to abstain for a few days before.

An abnormal pap does not necessarily mean HPV. There can be many other reasons for an abnormal pap...although Im not sure what tells the doc. it is HPV.
When you have a thin prep done aka pap smear they test for HPV as well. If you had an infection of any kind, e.g., a yeast inf. that would alter the results of a pap. It could have been the early stages of a yeast inf. but then the doc should have seen that upon inserting the speculum into the area..confuses me why docs still do the pap and know that a yeast inf. may alter the results...
HPV is a virus and not bacterial. low grade hpv - goes away on it's own - needing to be retested in a few months.. high grade hpv..usually one would need a colpo IF the pap came back abormal as well.
