I find when I give my boys Motrin they sleep a bit longer.

You should go by weight instead of age so the doseage seemed right. Giving it to him at night is ok but I dont understand why he told you to give it after the bottle as well. Did you take his temp? Yes, Motrin has made my kids sleepy and lets them rest. No moving all over when asleep.
